  • Indian Railways reaches Sri Lanka, to export DMU train sets to island nation

According to the delivery schedule finalised by the two nations, the first DMU train set comprising 13 coaches will be shipped out to the island nation in September, while the rest will arrive there by year-end. DMU train sets do not require separate locomotives as the engines are incorporated into one or more of its coaches.

Looks beautiful! But what's happaned about that privately run railway service that will operate the line? Or is the government going to do it after all?

Wonder what purpose this locomotive is going to serve.
It has a power rating of 4500HP.
Axle load of 21tons and weighs 130 tons!!!. C0-C0 axle arrangements.
It would no way be suitable for the upcountry line. But even other lines do not demand such a huge loco. The longest passenger consists in SL are around 15 carriages which the existing M8 and M10 manage to haul quite easily.
From what I think this is the locomotive that's going to be hauling the garbage train to aruvakkalu, puttalam.

Haleef do you have any idea which shed it would be operated from, ELS or DRS?

Is this a one off unit or are we getting down a few more?

One unit only for the moment for test purposes. If the tests are successful, the rest will follow in a few months time.

This will mainly be for Northern line ops. The locomotive is way to long to be sent on the up country tracks and on tight bends. There will definitely be derailments if so.

This will be operated by the Running Shed, since it is a 2 stroke locomotive (EMD).

That's exactly what I thought as well, but the since the M8 and M10 both DLW are operated by ELS we cannot predict. Let's hope it goes to running shed.

Still cannot think of a use in the northern line. The longest consist on the northern line is the Night mail which is 15 Romanian coaches, that's gonna be a price of cake for this V16 behemoth.

It is also ridiculously long atleast to haul the Kandy office train 1035 where an M9 is used which now sadly has to get the help from a bank locomotive from rambukkana onwards just to haul 9 coaches after it started experiencing sudden power loss due to engine overheating.
