But I am quite sure initially SriLankan had plans to operate only CMB-HRI-MLE (2 Weekly) and CMB-HRI-RUH (2 Weekly). When China Eastern was planning to connect China with HRI. Unfortunately China Eastern has now cancelled the plan of flying directly to HRI. So SriLankan Airlines is now looking at takeover the HRI-China route effec 31 March.

Mattala Airport is mainly attracting tourists who visits Sri Lanka to see places like Yala National Park, Arugam bay etc. IMO, SriLankan Airlines should operate only the seasonal long-haul flights out of HRI while Mihin Lanka operate schedule medium and short-haul flights from HRI to Chennai, Bangkok, Singapore, Gaya, Dubai-Riyadh and Male' with single A319.

I think UL or MJ should fly HRI-BKK and time their flights similarly with UL's current CMB-BKK-China flights. By doing this customers can then hop onto UL's China bound planes in BKK and everyone retains a one stop service. Also this way UL or MJ can possibly do a daily flight (or at least do more than twice weekly).

              • flydubai commenced Dubai-Mattala direct flights

Dubai-based flydubai will fly three times a week to Sri Lanka’s new Mattala International Airport from May 21.

flydubai, which touched down its inaugural flight to HRI today, has announced its plans to bring tourists from Central and Eastern Europe and the Commonwealth of Independent States to the new gateway in the south of Sri Lanka.

HRI – opened today, providing Sri Lanka with a second international gateway.

Enhanced connections at Dubai will help serve demand from these regions for leisure breaks in Sri Lanka, said flydubai’s chief commercial officer, Hamad Obaidalla.

flydubai has flown to Sri Lanka’s Bandaranaike airport near Colombo since 2010, introducing daily flights from March 2012.

“Through this new route, those seeking leisure breaks from Central and Eastern Europe and the CIS will be able to take advantage of the affordable, high quality service for onward travel to Sri Lanka via one stop in Dubai aviation’s hub,” said Obaidalla.

flydubai claims its network to the CIS and Central and Eastern Europe is the most comprehensive among Middle Eastern carriers.

                      • Srilankan cuts flights to Tamil Nadu by half

Sri Lanka’s national airline has announced that it was halving the number of flights to south India following a number of incidents in that part of the country.

SriLankan Airlines said it has observed a drop in traffic between Chennai and Colombo due to recent developments in Tamil Nadu, hence it was decided to reduce its frequency of flights to Chennai from 28 to 14 per week from Thursday.

“Revised schedule involves two daily flights, departing Colombo in the morning and evening, to facilitate the passengers who board their flights to Middle East and far eastern destinations from Chennai. Flights to other Indian destinations will be operated uninterrupted. SriLankan Airlines is closely observing the situation and will take further action if necessary,” the airline said.

The announcement came after the External Affairs Ministry urged Sri Lankans travelling to Tamil Nadu to be cautious as a result of the recent incidents targeting Sri Lankans in the area.

                              • @CalgaryLankan - Goodnews! Turkish Airlines to offer additional flights to Colombo in High Season (Winter 2013 to Summer 2014).

Infact FlyDubai will operate a round-robin route as FZ551 to HRI via CMB and FZ552 is nonstop on HRI-DXB. But Air Arabia currently operating nonstop flights between SHJ and HRI, twise a week basis. It will be interesting to see what the PLF going to be on HRI flights in coming months. Btw, Sri Lanka should promote HRI as a leisure destination for tourists who visits Southern Sri Lanka (Kumana Bird Sanctuary, Yala National Park, Arugam Bay for Surfing etc ..)

SLTB has launched a luxury bus service between Colombo Fort and HRI. Five buses every day. Buses starting from 5am until 21pm. Luxury Fare Rs 1,175 while semi-luxury for Rs 960, According to Daily news.

@newsflasher - Perhaps FlyDubai routed to HRI via CMB for the in inauguration ceremony. We are very thankful to Air Arabia and FlyDubai for coming forward to serve HRI. Any idea if Etihad Airways, Qatar Airways, Air Asia .. interested in operating to HRI ?
