SriLankan Airlines currently serve Beijing (four weekly), Shanghai (four weekly), Guangzhou (four weekly), Hong Kong (three weekly) & Chongqing (once weekly) in China. Please note Colombo-Kunming route is already been served by China Eastern with three weekly onboard B737. SriLankan Airlines has plans to add more destinations in China in the future. Guys any idea if this Kunming route will become profitable for SriLankan? share your views..

    I know Chongqing is seasonal, I thought Kunming was too.

        the previous pics posted here regarding UL a321 4R-ABQ is completely misleading.

        it does NOT have the UL brand new a230 (4rabm/n/o/p) look at all.

        in fact it has a much BETTER interior.

        I flew in it yesterday from cmb - dxb.

        SO PLEASE HAVE A LOOK AT THE ABOVE PICS OF ITS Y CLASS CABIN.

        SINCERE APOLOGIES FOR NOT BEING ABLE TO POST J CLASS OF IT. - THE J IS ALSO VERY DIFFERENT

          Thanks for the pics 4R-ALA. Looks like they're using RAVE IFE in the A321s? (anyone able to confirm this). If so, good move IMHO. Looks like current UL management are trying to improve their product which is good news for all.

              Yes but you have to pay $5 extra compared to doing it online

              SAARC memeber - $20 on arrival (online - $15)
              Anywhere else - $35 on arrival (online - $30)

                Yes this is definitely RAVE IFE, exactly the same system found on some of UL's A332s (4R-ALH and ALJ) and A343s (4R-ADE and 4R-ADF).

                Very interesting that UL has selected this product now also on narrowbody aircraft, if I'm not wrong it is the first airline/aircraft in the world to do so?

                • Hi again, I have two questions I'd wish to ask you experts here:

                  1. Flight UL505 (CMB-LHR) on SUNDAYS have already been delayed severely by at least 2-3 hours for the last few weeks. The flight today is even scheduled to depart at 06:05 now, rather than the original 02:45. Can anyone explain what's going on?

                  2. For delays of such scale (over 3 hours), what policies or actions does UL take to compensate passengers? Food/voucher/a room to rest/nothing?

                  Basically, someone I know is on the flight from a previous connection and he now has >7 hours of transit instead of 3.5 hours.

                  • yes it is RAVE. the service was lovely and efficient.

                    as per the serendib magazine which features the a333 of UL - it states IFE to be of thales avant. mood lighting to suit meal and relaxation times with sunrise, sunset and starry night themes.

                      UL 505 is run by A 340. MR regularly use A 340 for his foreign tours. That is the main reason for this delay according to my understanding.

                        Hmm it's sort of ridiculous that all other passengers have to suffer because of his visit. But was that the same reason for the delays for three consecutive weeks now?

                        • SriLankan Airlines has commissioned a “VIP conversion kit” for one of its new A330 aircraft so that President Mahinda Rajapaksa and his inner circle can travel abroad in comfort, authoritative sources said. The conversion kit is produced and installed by the Airbus Corporate Jet Centre (ACJC). The company is an Airbus subsidiary that offers “top-quality cabin outfitting and innovative packages of nose-to-tail services to VVIP and Head of State ACJ customers”.

                          It is widely known in aviation circles that one of SriLankan’s new aircraft is being configured especially for the President’s frequent travels abroad. The ACJ website says the kit allows transformation of the forward commercial passenger area into a spacious VIP section. It may include two double-VIP seats and two Club-Four VIP seats with Hi/Lo tables.

                          “To complement this VIP configuration and bring a warmer ambience and greater privacy, the forward area also features partitions, high quality leather upholstery, woolen carpets and elegant curtains,” it adds. “In order to meet special needs, other customised configurations are designed on demand.”
                          The kit can typically be installed within eight hours. However, it is not known what special features were requested on behalf of President Rajapaksa or whether these would take longer to put in place. It is also not clear how much the deal cost. A spokesman for ACJC refused to divulge details.

                          “Airbus has a modern family of corporate jets, about 170 of which are in widespread service with a variety of companies, individuals and governments,” David Velupillai, Marketing Director, told the Sunday Times. “Most of these customers ask for discretion, and we naturally respect their wishes, so we are often unable to provide information about specific customers. One option is indeed to offer customers a VIP kit, which can be installed relatively quickly in part of the cabin of an airliner to provide a cost-effective short-term corporate jet solution to government needs,” he added. “The cost of such a kit will depend on exactly what is involved, and is commercially confidential.”

                          SriLankan has ordered ten new aircraft from Airbus: six A330-300s and four new generation A350-900s. One A330 has already been delivered while another is due in December. Some airlines buy VIP conversion kits for commercial purposes but the sources said only President Rajapaksa was likely to use the one that has been commissioned for him. Last year, Bangkok Airways acquired a kit that could turn part of an A319 aircraft into a luxury cabin with sofas, tables and other amenities.

                          The purchase was announced to the public with Bangkok Airways President Puttipong Prasartthong-Osoth revealing that the company had paid US$ 5-6 million to a French company (not ACJC) for the kit. He was also quoted as saying that the aircraft with VIP configuration would be used by his father and Bangkok Airways founder Prasert in addition to being available for general charter.

                          President Rajapaksa usually travels on an A340 from SriLankan’s existing fleet. It was in service on Thursday when he and his entourage flew to Rome for an audience with Pope Francis.

                          i guess using a plane for HE's travel which is for normal pax is putting the passengers in a disaster . He should have ordered a A320neo or A319 with full VVIP configure n keep it with him for his travel purpose .

                            • Totally agree. Its not good to share an aircraft with commercial & VIP operations. They should have taken dedicated A320, A319, B737 or ERJ.

                                I totally agree with UL for selecting 4 weekly flights for CMB-KMG route because they must need to do better to compete with counterpart MU which is providing 3 weekly flights directly to CMB and then MLE. UL's KMG flight is targeting chinse tourists who are flying to Sri Lanka and the Maldives. Also it's appears to be Sri Lanka has a good demand for cargo and business travel in Kunming since they have promoted at the trade fair in Yunnan province in June 2014. Also since SriLankan had increased more direct flights to China and the Maldives, China based airlines have reduced the operations to Male' due to fall in the passenger demand i.e. Shanghai Airlines, Air China, Sichuan Airlines etc.. doesn't fly to Male anymore. However Male' based Mega Maldives Airlines is a big threat for UL because Mega Maldives Airlines is linking direct flights from Male' with Beijing and Shanghai (Five weekly) and Hong Kong with two weekly onboard B757 and B767. I appreciate SriLankan for increasing more flights to China which is a profitable destination and it's a growing market. Also please note not many airlines connect Kunming from Europe, Middle East and South Asia. So SriLankan has to increase the presense at KMG for making Kunming travellers to transit via Colombo hub. I wish if they add Chengdu and African destinations to it's network. What's your opinion guys??

                                If i can recall it correctly SriLankan never operated a seasonal flight to Kunming and Chengdu in the past as how stated in SriLankan Airlines website. Correct me if i'm wrong. It's good UL loaded the KMG flights in Amadeus 2 months before the flight launch. I think UL has to start advertising the flights from now on.

                                @Sakith - Is UL's KMG flight a seasonal service? I can see KMG flight so far loaded only between 1st Dec 2014 and Mar 2015. Please confirm?
