For the first time in Sri Lanka’s aviation history, Emirates will launch its double-deck Airbus A380 aircraft on flights to Colombo commencing August 14. An official from Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation said this service would be a once-a-week flight and it would operate with a stopover in a destination in the Far East. The Airbus A380 flies to Sri Lanka subsequent to the airport runway expansion concluded last April. The Airbus A380 is a double-deck, wide-body, four-engine jet airliner manufactured by European manufacturer Airbus.

Any guesses on the "far east" destination?
Hi umedha, do you have more information about A380 service to Colombo? Media says its a once a week flight via far east destination from August 2017. Any idea what is the name of that far east destination? Day of operation? Flight number ? Flight timing etc..

SL gov was approving 5th Daily Frequency for EK to get approval from UAE for allowing 2nd Daily flights for UL on CMB-DXB.
May be EK is thinking to use A380 on one of the daily flight instead of operating 5 x Daily B777s.
I guess good idea to fly Daily x DXB-CMB-SIN onboard A380. Rest of the 3 x Daily DXB-CMB onboard B777s.
Does CMB have airbridge supporting A380 operation? I thought A380 cant enter in the apron where the airbridges are and That's why A380 have been using cargo apron when ever its does the emergency landing in CMB.
Its supposed to depart XFW today for the ferry flight to CMB. but for some reason its been postponed to tomorrow. It will be delivered as UL1206 and CMB arrival time is 02:15am on 02-Jul.
any reason why 4R-ABL & 4R-ABN are not flying recently ?

It will be a good idea if A380 serves Colombo. But I doubt that it could pass Apron Delta, as the wingtip might collide with the terminal building. But Apron Alpha taxiways (on edges) have been widened enough for the A380 to proceed taxiing. But there can be an alternative that if the A380 cannot pass through Apron Delta and Charlie, it could maybe taxi on the runway, and then get off the runway near the RWY 22 intersecting point, just near the end, taxi back onto the taxiway, and then get onto the runway from the RWY 22 holding point maybe.
