  • Emirates cancels order for 70 Airbus A350s

Dubai's Emirates Airline has cancelled an order for 70 of Airbus's A350 wide-bodied aircraft, the planemaker says.

Airbus said the cancellation had followed "ongoing discussions with the airline in light of their fleet requirement review".

In 2007, Emirates placed 50 orders for the A350-900 and 20 for the A350-1000, with deliveries due from 2019.

UK engine maker Rolls-Royce said the cancellation would lead to a £2.6bn hit to its order book.

"While disappointed with this decision, we are confident that the delivery slots which start towards the end of this decade vacated by Emirates will be taken up by other airlines," Rolls-Royce said

    • Very interesting indeed.

Despite Leahy's claim that he heard about the cancellation this morning, first hand information from EK suggests that this has been in the works for a long time.

DXB will be significantly constrained in years to come choking the growth of EK and the only way for EK to grow would be by upguaging their fleet.

Cancellation of the A350 was apparently discussed in the same breath with the order for 777X and A380 last year.

      Come 2020, EK will be a two (work)horse fleet; A380 and B777.

Think of an airline whose smallest aircraft would be the 77W!

Only a punt here, but my guess is that the cost difference between loading a 777 (400 pax thereabouts) and running the fuel-efficient A350 with fewer pax doesn't make sense, given the upfront cost of retraining staff on the A350 and setting up maintenance for a new model.

Very interesting.. think of EZ, only a couple of models to keep cost down. EK operating on a similar low-cost model w.r.t. fleet.

Nothing more but this has been the 3rd aircraft shot down by Ukraine in this month

What we know about the string of planes shot down over eastern Ukraine and who could have done it.

              • Srilankan not using Ukrainian airspace

SriLankan Airlines yesterday said that its flights were not using Ukrainian airspace when travelling to Europe.

In response to A question whether the airline had diverted its path following Thursday's Malaysian flight crash, a spokesman for the Srilankan said, “As a policy our flights are not operating airspaces, where there are conflicts. In this case our flights are taking different path when travelling to Europe, and we don't use the Ukrainian airspace.”

I think the previous livery is much better. It's sad to hear they are changing livery to something that with a very dull look. What do you think?

The Boeing Company will donate Dreamliner "Number 3" to the Museum during an 11 a.m. ceremony with Doug King, President and CEO of The Museum of Flight, and numerous Boeing leaders and employees. The airplane will be in the Museum's East Parking Lot, and open to the public from noon to 5 p.m. Saturday, and all day Sunday, Nov. 9. The ceremony and entry to the aircraft are free with admission to the Museum.

To celebrate the Dreamliner's arrival, the museum will be free for all Boeing employees, retirees, and suppliers, plus up to six guests apiece on November 8-9. Employees and retirees must show proof of Boeing employment to take advantage of this offer.

QF 7/8 SYD-DFW/DFW-SYD. Have done this flight in Oct 2013 when it was B747-400ER. But on return from DFW, the flight was DFW-BNE-SYD as B747-400ER did not have range to do DFW-SYD non stop. Even DFW-BNE was a stretching it to limits, as when the headwinds as strong.. on many a times the flight used to get diverted to AKL for refuelling. I wonder when such a diversion is done whether a crew change is required due to crew going over limits. Good that the route is A380 now as the flight can come to SYD direct from DFW. On another note the A380 used for inaugural flight had to return back so SYD a few days later when operating QF to DFW yet again due to a fuel pump issue. Good it didnt happen on inaugural flight

VH-OQL QFA380 on inaugural QF 7 had cowboy hat and scarf of Kangaroo
