  • German aero company to open Mattala school

For the first time in the region, a German aeronautical company is planning to open an aeronautical engineering school in Sri Lanka.

The German company is also looking at using the Mattala airport for training purposes.

Airport and Aviation Services (Sri Lanka) Limited,Chairman Ananda Wimalasena said the German company will also invite foreign students to come to Sri Lanka to follow the courses.

“When this Engineering School concept gets popular, we hope to convert some of the unused buildings at the Mattala airport to provide hostel facilities for these students.

The Airport and Aviation Services (Sri Lanka) Limited (AASL) has decided to shelve plans for the construction of the second stage of the Mattala Rajapaksa International Airport in Hambantota.

“Currently we do not see any need expand in the MRIA,” Wimalasena said.

He said only one airline (flydubai ) is landing at the MRIA and we see only less than 70 passengers using the airport daily.”

He said hardly any revenue is generated from this airport and they have to pay Rs. 600 million only as interest and keep on paying a further Rs. 2 billion annually for 10 more years towards the settlement of the capital.

The Chairman said that today the average revenue per year from the Mattala operations was around Rs. 250 million and the pulling out of SriLankan Airlines and Mihin Lanka too have further deepened financial woes of MRIA.

He said that once an airport is declared and accepted as an international airport they cannot arbitrarily close the airport. “Hence we are forced to carry on operations incurring huge losses.”

“We are now on the look out to formulate a plan to try to turnaround this loss making venture. This includes plans to woo more tourists to use the airport.AASL is looking at offering visa free landing for foreigners to MRIA.” He said that they are looking at putting together an international style shopping mall to woo Indian travellers. “In addition we are also looking at taking over the catering business thus ensuring AASL of providing this service and gaining income.”

    • Wish CMB have regular A380 flights. Any chance EK using high density A380 service to CMB and cut down the frequency of flights.

For anything like that to happen, i'm telling you sl will see 10 new presidents, 15 new prime ministers and possibly 25 new cabinet proposals, all sorts of corruption allegations, possibly a war. Trust me it takes at least a decade for some new law to be passed and another 10 for it to be implemented.

Before A380 operations, they should really at least renovate that crappy international airport in CMB. Indian airports are far ahead and standardized than BIA today.

A380 operations into SL is just wishful thinking. I really wouldn't be surprised if all airlines just stop flying into CMB in the first place.

Further more, the donkeys that make up the SL govt would try to attract A380 flights to HRI when in the first place an airline with a turboprop wouldn't fly to that unknown airport.

whats going on with BIA stage 2 development project? we can't even think about A380 regular flights without that stage 2 development. although they land A380 for an emergency they wouldn't like to come regularly because they have to shutdown A380 outer engines due to short of runway width. So we need to refurbish our runway ASAP. And its better to have well spaced second runway @BIA

good idea. but I don't think they will remove the af base. because there are airforce residence and many other things. if they remove af base they have to move all the things belong with it. But according to wikipedia

"The second stage will involve the acquisition of 600 hectares of public land, the construction of a runway capable of accommodating new-generation airplanes, an aircraft repair and maintenance center, an arrival and a departure terminal, a shopping arcade, a cargo complex connected to the airport by rail and a multistory car park"

                • Sri Lanka to build second runway at Katunayake international airport

COLOMBO (EconomyNext) – Sri Lanka plans to build a second runway at its main airport, the Bandaranaike International Airport, Shibly Aziz, chairman of the Civil Aviation Authority said.

“The BIA needs to be expanded as a commercial hub,” Aziz told EconomyNext.com. “If so, it is imperative there should be a second runway.”

The BIA at Katunayake, north of the capital Colombo, handles almost all scheduled commercial flights.

Aziz said the government wants to build a second runway as soon as possible as passenger and freight traffic was growing but said a timeframe had not yet been decided.

The planned second runway will be capable of handling the Airbus A380 aircraft, the world’s biggest commercial passenger jet.

Sri Lanka’s air travel industry was now recovering after the end the war, Aziz told a meeting of the Asia-Pacific aircraft accident investigation group of the International Civil Aviation Organization hosted by the Civil Aviation Authority that began in Colombo Tuesday.

“Now we’re on a trajectory of quick growth. We wish to catch up on lost time.

”There has been a steep spike in arrivals, more hotels are being built, there are more airline arrivals, and more investors are showing interest in Sri Lanka

So which one is better...relocating the complete af base (That include...hangers, residence etc) or buying public property with continuous litigations stuck in courts for years...???

ok if it seems relocating the af base is a hard choice , they actually can keep the base but to shift 3 hangers mainly ........ i think this is the most and easiest possible way to build a 2nd runway soon at BIA . the 3 hangers in the red circles needed to be relocated in af base and then they can lay a new runway . now we dont have a war ongoing thankfully so it wont be a security issue too ... isnt it ?

we all know better one is relocating af base..there is plenty of space to do so..if we can remove af base completely, that would be great because we want friendly airport not military type(my personal view). But i think they already planning to buy public land. someone in that area told me that they received some kind of leaflet about acquisition of public land.

Yes . this is the possible easiest way. But who knows? day by day, year by year our airport get less competitive, other airports in the region got so many things which we don't have. instead of developing BIA they built useless airport with wrong runway orientation. we have two runways but different locations.

A better option imho is to make the yellow area a parallel taxiway. Then build the second runway further west.

This will allow simultaneous parallel runway operations if the runways are spaced far enough apart.

A second option is a completely new terminal and apron system where the current airforce facilities are located with the second runway further West.

All this is probably moot as the government is out of money......
Always fly a stable approach - it's the only stability you'll find this business

Do we really need a second runway? there are much busier airports operating with one runway...and the A380 can use the runway which we currently have, may be extending the runway and improving the taxi ways would be a better option. and improve the infrastructure ( terminals, ramps etc ) if building another runway the slaf base should be taken off and public lands should be taken in big scale
