Good news if true but it could be to the detriment of BIA in the long term due to the efficiency of the Chinese. Or else it could spur BIA to become more efficient.

But I didn't get the part this part though ..

"“We suppose that this herd of deer used to stay in the airport premises, since the period of airport constructions. Perhaps this herd gets fenced in here, while building the mesh fence around the airport premises,” Mr. Kumara said. He said the number of deer in this herd had increased within around three years and now it had become a large herd of 100"

It appears that the herd used to come during the construction of the airport. Well it was built on a clear forest and deers may have continued coming even after the airport was built but had problems leaving the area after the fence was built

I wonder who operates the 717 ? Unless somebody has prepared to fly 717s. Anyway, I don't expect the news to be accurate,

Current runway can theoretically accommodate 737s.

Jaffna airport now has a runway of 2.3 kilometers which is said to be enough to take narrow body jet passenger aircraft like Boeing 717 which can carry 100 passengers.

              • 2.3 km is more than enough for a 737 when considering the runway at Santos Dumont airport in Rio de Janeiro is only 1.3 km. But the problem is the surface and the strength of the runway. When looking at the google earth image of JAF it seems as if nearly 50% of the runway is badly worn out.

                  • According to this it seems that BIA will have 3 runways. 1 is too less but 3 is too much

                    • Japan lends Rs. 56 billion to Sri Lanka for expansion of main airport

The agency said it will fund building a new passenger terminal at the Bandaranaike International Airport which suffers congestion from growing tourism. The new passenger terminal building is planned to be opened in 2020 and will enable handling of 15 million passengers a year, more than doubling the present capacity and ease the congestion.

                      • The new passenger terminal building of the Bandaranaike International Airport is planned to be open in 2020.The loan is for the construction of a new multi-level terminal building (Terminal 2) with an approximate floor area of 180,000 m2, where arrivals and departures are separated vertically, and consists of two pier buildings, Pier 2 & Pier 3. The new terminal building would feature additional 96 check-in counters, 8 baggage claim belts, 7 baggage make-up carousels, 16 contact boarding gates with 28 Passenger Boarding Bridges, and six bus gates.

It's important CMB needs to be upgraded very soon because the airport's current status is very poor. I was reading on news somewhere UL CEO was saying upgradation of CMB going to be started from Jan next year.

One thing I noticed on a recent trip to SL is the new piers at the airport seems to have been constructed without any plan. The waiting lounges do not have the capacity to seat all the passengers (we were only waiting to board a 330). The washrooms also seem to be badly planned in this new extension with the washbasins on the the other side of the stalls which was quite strange. I hope the new piers are better planned.

At the risk of offending MRs supporters, the updates during the last few years were a lot of eye wash- and your words just affirm it.

Well, there are too many things there that doesn't befit an international airport...
