The really critical value is the pavement strength - that will determine what aircraft can land there.
Given the height from sea level 1500m looks enough for jets. Santos Dumont airport (SDU/SBRJ) in Rio de Janeiro handles regular B738, A32X and E170 with a runway of just 1300.

But of course, it all comes down to the pavement strength

      • Just had a look - Ratmalana has a very low pavement strength. This means that an A320 will be weight restricted (probably to the point that operations are not practical).

Having flown with a number of F/O who are now Captain A320 - you really don't want them operating into a short runway like this......
Always fly a stable approach - it's the only stability you'll find this business

Sri Lanka Air Force following discussions with the DGCA has agreed to shift its fighter planes to Mattala depending on the operational plan to take care of the national defense requirement.

not only the fighters, the whole airbase should be relocated. It's using up valuable land for expansion at BIA

What fighters? . According to our airforce spokesperson only one Kfir and one or two F-7s are in flying condition. So that leaves a grand total of 2 or 3 fighters that can actually fly to HRI.

The rest can be probably scrapped on the spot.

I hope at least a few Kfir will get preserved. They were an important (if not the most important) part of our airforce's history and deserve to remembered.

It's time out for the Kfirs and F-7s(Made In China MiG 21s). It would be better to have a few second hand MiG 29s and SU 27s rather than spending on new ones from less established manufacturers like HAL and CAC/PAC.

I love seeing this whenever I pass Air Force HQ. I'm hoping for something similar at Katunayake and a ground display at the SLAF Museum in Ratmalana.

That being said, please note that this is not the place to make "demands" because nobody here has the capacity to heed to your demands and take action.

This is a forum for discussions, sharing information and generally being enlightened about what is going on in Sri Lankan civil aviation.
