  • Well by any standards the BIA airport runway should be upgraded for ICAO = F certification regardless of money spent or corruption. This airport as we all know is the main gateway to Sri Lanka and it is already lagging behind in standards in contrast to world airports.

But the question is how about the taxiway and aprons, I believe they have to expand those as well and the jet bridges may need to be upgraded as well in order to be compatible with the A380s.

Looks like the 777X will be a Cat F rated aircraft so the runway widening to Cat F standard could be worth it. But yes its a waste of money if its solely intended for A380 operations.
      CAT E

"The 777-9X is a derivative of the 777-300ER with a new composite wing. Since
the larger wingspan places the 777X into ICAO Aerodrome Reference Code F, all
777X models include folding wing tips, allowing the 777X to operate in airport
taxiway and apron/gate system as a Code E aircraft with wingtips folded
      ."

        Thanks for the clarification.

This is in line with I what I remembered from reading about the 777X.

          • $48 Million for the work listed seems excessive. For some reason it is an estimate.

Any journalists here? You may want to investigate this contract.

Thats for taxiway and apron/gate system ops. Looks like it will operate from Cat F runways since I'd think its wings won't be folded upon takeoff/landing. Could be wrong though.

CAT E even for runway for B777X

the main concern on A380 operation on CAT E runway is engines on the far side of the fuselage which cannot operate fully...exhaust will damage the lighting system and damage the ground. When A380 lands in an existing CAT E runway like CMB they (pilots) are requested switch off the far side engines...this is not a issue for B777X...engines are only 1 meter away from the existing B777W

What required for CMB is a rapid exit taxiway system and extending length...which can increase the frequency of the runway utilization

It took 21million Euros to resurface and upgrade the runway at Manchester. At 2011's exchange rate, that's around $30million. Manchester's runway is around 300 meters shorter than CMB. And the work at CMB includes the taxiway system.

Thanks for the link. Just a few points.

Labour costs are much higher in the UK (not to mention overtime/night payments). The cost in Sri Lanka should be lower.

Even if we take a figure of $30 Million - that leaves $18 Million for taxiway work. What are they doing? Paving the taxiways with Gold?

The costs for this renovation are excessive - this contract needs to be investigated.

Given the way that "Business" is done in Sri Lanka what do people think is more likely:-

                        Contract is legitimate?

                        or

                        More Racketeering?

Not defending them but you also got to consider that labour costs have substantially increased since 2011. Doubt you'll ever see an investigation into this though
