  • Maldivian Airlines planned to run a Malé – Ratmalana service 3x weekly using Dash 8-300 turboprop equipment starting April 9, 2017. However, Sri Lankan Customs staff have yet to be deployed to the airport and the flights have not commenced.

I think RML need more preparation for handling the international flights.

I can confirm that some sort of construction is going on. At the airport right now, and RN construction has the entry passage to the airport mostly obstructed with boards hiding construction work going on behind. Airside seems to be normal for now.

          • Hi Umedha,

Did you notice any sign of construction work for new Colombo airport terminal? May be they have moved the B727F (TU-TAB) to near hangar to get more space for the construction work.

I heard that the 727 is going to be taken to Africa by the current owner of Lankan Cargo into his cargo airline known as 'LycaCargo' with a fleet of 4 B727F aircraft in Africa. I think he has bought down the aircraft back from Mr.Sajin Vaas. Currently the aircraft is under a small technical issue with one of its' engines, so it might take a while for them to ferry it to Africa.
Heard from a friend working at LycaCargo in Africa.

There's a minor construction going on in the Departure and Arrival walkways. This renovation is part of the beautification and utilizing the full space at BIA. As per AASL, Banks, Taxi Operators, Mobile Network Operators will be shifted to Walkways in order to utilize the space in the Departure and Arrival Lobbies. Both the Departure and Arrival Lobbies will be renovated once this construction done.

Another Major Renovation is, AASL planning to shift the Duty free operations to Second floor and utilize the First Floor for passenger movements since it's heavily congestion during peak hours. All these planes are preparation for the Terminal 2.

There will be another Apron - Apron Echo will be constructed once the two new piers been constructed. Since the current Apron Bravo and Apron Charlie will loose plenty of Remote gates LCC's will be discourage so the new Apron Echo in front of Fuel Farm will do their needful.

But, As you all are aware it's Sri Lanka. So practical way of doing things are questionable. As per the AASL instructor all these construction works including Terminal 2 will be completed by Mid 2020.

Here are some pictures from the current construction site.

Btw: Due to the construction some AC units are tured off. So it's too hot in some places. Specially the Departure walkway and lobby.

Really i didn't noticed that. we didn't had a chance to look around the airport leasurly. Airport was full of passengers to Indian destinations on that day. Baggage scanning machine was out of order. Our flight got late by about 20 minutes.
