Terminal 2 project of BIA to resume with Japan’s assistance: Aviation Minister

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has extended its support to Sri Lanka to restore the economy and the Airport and Aviation Services (Sri Lanka) Limited (AASL) can resume the Terminal 02 project of the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) with the assistance of JICA and the Government of Japan, Ports, Shipping and Aviation Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva said.

Sri Lanka airport moves to tackle congestion as tourists return

Sri Lanka’s main airport is moving to tackle congestion by increasing service counters as tourist arrivals pick up in 2023, and construction of a Japanese funded second terminal is suspended after the country defaulted external debt.

“With the dawn tourist season, the number of tourists arriving in Sri Lanka is increasing, creating possible passenger congestion, especially at the arrival terminal of the Katunayake airport,” a statement from the Airport and Aviation Services said.

Sri Lanka to become Air Hub in the region

Addressing the 30 year development plan of the Colombo North Port workshop, on Friday (21) in Colombo, President Ranil Wickremesinghe emphasized that the government’s intention is to make Sri Lanka an air and sea hub in the region. The country has to focus on its future in the next 25 years on how to make Sri Lanka a developed country, he added.

The President also stressed that the attention should be drawn to the development in India, Pakistan, Iran, and the entire Makran coast, in assessing the role that Sri Lanka.

Talk only, air hub in the region ??? Have they seen Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore, Chennai or let’s not compare India, at least try to keep up with Male airport ? Far more busy with many international airlines visiting as scheduled flights

Private Jets keen to use Mattala Airport

Several prominent Russian tour operators/agents in the UAE, who represent VVIPs, celebrities, and wealthy business magnates, are interested in parking their luxury jets in Sri Lanka while they vacation in the Maldives or Seychelles.

Due to space constraints at the airports in the Maldives and Seychelles, these clients cannot store their private jets at those locations, and the jets and security personnel must fly back to the Gulf countries and remain there until the owner’s holiday is over.

Sri Lanka to establish new International civil airport, area identified

The government is considering establishing an international civil airport in Hingurakgoda, it was reported.

According to Daily Mirror, the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Aviation plans to develop the Hingurakgoda Airport, also known as the Minneriya Airport, as an international civil airport.

During a special discussion held at the Ministry yesterday (03), Minister of Ports, Shipping and Aviation Nimal Siripala de Silva made the proposal to develop the Hingurakgoda Airport as an international civil airport.

The Minister pointed out the convenience of facilitating visits to the Polonnaruwa, Anuradhapura, Sigiriya and Dambulla areas by transforming the Hingurakgoda airport into an international civil airport.

He further said that this development will help Sri Lanka increase its foreign exchange earnings by attracting more foreign tourists to these historical and cultural sites.

“A field study will be conducted pertaining to improving and developing the airport for the landing and takeoff of A330 aircraft. Extending the current 2,287 m runway up to 2,800 m, construction of an access way to the airport runway, setting up an air navigation system, and construction of an Air Traffic Control (ATC) tower and a passenger terminal at the airport were decided as essential measures,” he added.

Minister Nimal Sirpala de Silva further revealed that the administration and operation of the said airport are currently under the Sri Lanka Air Force. (NewsWire)

Sorry but this crazy! Why don't they spend the money on completing Terminal 2 at CMB as soon as possible and concentrate on developing the Jaffna Airport to handle B737 and A320 ? Jaffna Airport has potential to connect flights to India, Maldives, Middle East and Far East.

I can't imagine the thinking behind this sleepy politician and the so called officials. It's another plot to rob money. Sri Lanka needs to develop its only international airport BIA to meet international standards. This country is full of thieves and blank heads. No wonder we cannot move forward from here.

another batticaloa airport!!! TRR has more potential than that, and we're a small country with less aircraft movements than Maldives. yet we have HRI,JAF,RML and CMB. all of them are Intl airports. another pet project to steal some money. so my opinion is we don't need more international airports, it's better to attract more airlines for existing airports by lowering the landing and tax fees,(etc.)
specially for airports like HRI & RML.

Work on Terminal II to resume in 3 months

Construction work on the Bandaranaike International Airport’s (BIA) Terminal II project is expected to recommence in three months, Airport and Aviation Services (Sri Lanka) (Pvt) Ltd. (AASL) reveals.

Speaking to The Sunday Morning Business, AASL Chairman Maj. Gen. (Retd) G.A. Chandrasiri stated that the Government had informed that the funding from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) related to the BIA Terminal II project would be released within the next couple of months. Therefore, the AASL was currently preparing to recommence construction work at the BIA, he stated.

Joke! The Gov better focus on completing the Terminal 2 asap for the only International Airport instead of focusing on other white elephant projects.

Sri Lanka plans aircraft dismantling at Mattala Airport

ECONOMYNEXT – State-run Airport and Aviation Services of Sri Lanka is planning aircraft dismantling center at Mattala Rajapaksa International airport, as part of several new activities to boost revenues, Chairman G A Chandrasiri has said.

To boost utilization of the airport government approval has been received for several new activities including aircraft parking, a maintenance repair & overhaul (MRO) centre and cargo transshipment.

Aircraft Disassembly and Recycling is also a promising revenue earner, Chandrasiri said in the agency’s 2022 annual report.

Mattala Airport had marked 10 years on March 18, 2023.

The airport handled 11,577 passengers, down 65 percent from a year ago, and 2 metric tonnes cargo, down 96 percent. Aircraft movements were also down to 63 percent to 216. (Colombo/June 08/2023)
