Presently Saudia is utilising four of the B747-400s to the high density (High Y traffic) routes like CMB, MNL, LAH ... Saudia flying four frequencies to CMB all of those four flights are operated by B747-400s.

On the other hand UL is sending mostly A343s to Saudi Arabian cities to cater the high demand of both business and economy class traffic to/from Sri Lanka. Recently UL's frequencies have been increased to Saudi as 2 to 3 for JED, also has plans to increase RUH from 2 to 5 and DMM 3 to 4 with the effect of mid-Dec 2012, by that time 4R-ADA returns from the c-checks.

744 is to be phased out and replacement aircraft is 77W with high density Y config of 3 4 3

on the other hand did SL Govt signed a new ASA with Saudi Govt. Old one gives only 2 flights for Riyadh and restricted on Jeddah.

Looks like CX 749 (HKG - JNB) diverted to CMB for some reason.

UL2964 from CGK to CMB. I tried repeatedly to check in online for this flight, but always encountered a message that the online facility is only available between 2 and 48 hours prior to departure. Strangely, I was attempting to check in 16 hours beforehand. Even mailing the supposed "online check-in help desk" was pointless - no reply. When I arrived at CGK, I discovered that this flight is operated by Mihin Lanka A320 - quite a step down from UL in terms of standards. There is no IFE on this flight of 4 1/2 hours duration - not even a route map displayed on an overhead screen (although all seat armrests had IFE controls fitted). You cannot lift any armrests, so even if you have three seats of a row to yourself, there is no way you could lie down across all seats. Catering is basic. A carton of fruit juice or water from the trolley prior to the meal service. The meal tray was about A4 size and was populated by a lone and small aluminium food container with a cardboard lid, plus a set of plastic cutlery. Contents: three small morsels of chicken plus rice. Even on my first flight to Sri Lanka on Aeroflot from Karachi in 1980 I was offered more. My attempt to purchase a beer was unsuccessful. Whilst a 330ml can of Heineken (why no Sri Lankan beer) was produced and a price of US$3 charged, the crew had absolutely no change for a £5 note. On a positive note, the flight was on time. I am at a loss to understand why a full-service carrier like UL operates code-share flights with a LCC.

I used flight UL 503 Colombo to London on 12th September 2012, it was delayed by approximately 90 minutes, the service provided by the cabin crew was one of the worst I have experienced, I have used this Airline before and it was a much better service. The management should do something about it before it becomes too late, as customers may choose one of the other Airlines which fly between London and Colombo.

              • Etihad Airways brings business class back to SL. Etihad Airways, the national carrier of the United Arab Emirates, will return to a two-class Airbus A320 aircraft on its service between Colombo and Abu Dhabi from October 1.

The four flights a week will each feature 16 premium seats with electronically controlled recline and lumbar support, generous leg and foot rest extensions, individual PC power supplies, in-arm meal tables and 10.6 inch touch screens.

Kumar De Silva, Etihad Airways' General Manager in Sri Lanka, said: "As the economy improves in Sri Lanka and business opportunities develop, we are confident this decision will appeal to businessmen who will also benefit from Etihad Airways' convenient connections onto the USA, Canada, Africa, the United Kingdom, Europe and the Middle East." Etihad Airways recently introduced a number of enhancements to its in-flight guest experience. Pearl Business class guests travelling on this route will be treated to new master chef-inspired culinary signature menus that are changed every two months.

As if the people at UL get to choose

How else can Mihin make money to justify it's own existence, and the pay of the staff, without taking UL loads ?

on the other hand, when you see a 4 digit flight number, alarm bells should have started ringing, and opted for an alternate code-shared carrier, if available ...

Great News! One of the highlight in the news you shared is SriLankan Airlines is going to fly nonstop flights to Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Hong Kong. Currently all China and Hong Kong flights are being operated via Bangkok. In the initial period Chengdu flights will be operated via Bangkok.

SriLankan was about to start nonstop flights to Beijing and Shanghai in Winter 2012 but later that plan got cancelled. Hopefully they start China and Hong Kong nonstop flights in Summer 2013.

I assume China frequency reductions to allow more flights to LHR for peak pax sales in Winter 2012.. or for the shortage of aircraft due to maintanance reasons. @Sakith - Do you know anything about this ?
