  • Turkish Airlines may use Mattala Airport & Closer cooperation with Sri Lankan Airlines

Minister Rauff Hakeem, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe’s special envoy to Turkey, wants that country’s national airline (Turkish) to use the Mattala Airport as an aviation hub.

One of his official meetings was with the Deputy Chairman and CEO of Turkish Airlines Dr. Temel Kotil and other senior executives. Among matters discussed were closer cooperation between the Turkish Airlines and the Sri Lankan Airlines and the possibility of the Turkish Airlines utilizing Mattala Airport as a maintenance hub.

Dr.Kotil was eminently receptive to the suggestion made and as a follow up to this wishes to invite a team of officials from the Sri Lankan Airlines to discuss the areas of mutual cooperation and strategic alliance. He also agreed to host a delegation of Sri Lankan inbound travel agents in Istanbul for a an introductory program with the Turkish Airlines travel agents both in Turkey and in Europe.

Minister Hakeem expressed his appreciation to the Turkish Airlines for their interest in Sri Lanka and promised to coordinate the follow up actions with the various line agencies and ministries.

UL can't pay for them and they are not needed especially if most of the European routes are going to go.

They've deferred delivery - but the Airline will only be in worse shape next year. They won't be able to pay for them next year either.

What makes most sense is that they're trying to offload them to another customer. Explains why Qatar CEO was in town recently.
If UL lends A350 aircrafts to another airline as lease basis, Isn't it embarrassing when one of the first ten customers to receive A350XWB do so?

according to AF777 the tail of the First Aircraft is fully painted now. So its going to fly definitely for Srilankan then.

Delivery has been deferred until next year - the aircraft will go into storage.
Always fly a stable approach - it's the only stability you'll find this business

And means that, same fate to rest of the UL's A350s too. IT'S A SHAME!!

The 350s were supposed to replace the 332s, so is that plan out of the door now? The 332s are also bit long on the tooth now and seem to primarily responsible in contributing to negative comments on skytrax.

Does anyone from UL have any insight on any projected fuel savings by replacing the 200s? Or that does not matter anymore because of the global oil prices? I feel the 332s need to be replaced, but with the current long haul route cuts 333 might be a better option?

                          • As long as there is no official statement from the airline I still believe 350s will join UL and also replace aging 332s.

I don't think even the airline knows what the final decision is yet. The issue keeps being bought up both in UL and among politicians but no one has an answer yet.

Personally I'd love to see A350s flying in UL colors. I guess we'll have to wait and see

This. Plus since the first three A350s are on lease, UL will still have to pay the lease on the aircraft if they are stored till next year. So the storage rumour doesnt make sense. But who knows.
