    Mihin Lanka goes long range

Mihin Lanka, Sri Lanka’s leading low-cost carrier has obtainedapproval from CAASL for120 minutes of Extended Twin Engine Operations (Extended Diversion Time Operations).

Commenting on the importance of obtaining additional ETOPS flying time, Nishantha Ranatunga – Chairman / CEO, Mihin Lanka stated, "The additional flying time Mihin Lanka has received through ETOPS approval from CAASL reiterates the quality of the airline’s standards and procedures. In addition, 120 minutes of ETOPS approval will enable Mihin Lanka’s twin engine fleet to reach new destinations in the region, which will contribute further to Sri Lanka’s growing travel and aviation industries."

I've been hearing this "X years to profitability" crap since the GOSL took over the airline. Funny thing is that the year this will happen keeps changing. I think 2012 was the first target year. What is is now - 2019?

The increasing losses are cold hard facts.

I see there is also no mention where the money for all of this is going to come from - they still need almost Rs20,000,000/day just to keep operating.....

The whole "New Aircraft/Fuel efficiency = profits" argument is also very misleading. The whole argument is a myth.

Used A340 lease is anywhere from $150,000/month*- $500,000/month* depending on the aircraft.
New A330-300 lease price is around $900,000/month*
New A350 lease will be over $1,000,000/month*

*Lease rates are approximate - I am not in the aircraft leasing business but I do have an idea what sort of figures are involved.

While the newer aircraft are more fuel efficient they are also a great deal more expensive to lease. You've decreased one cost (fuel) but increased another (leasing costs). It isn't a case of "Instant profits". $500,000 buys a lot of fuel!

Without detailed financial information it is impossible to say what will happen with the introduction of newer aircraft.

All the more reason for an Independant Financial Audit - this will give an accurate picture of what to expect.
Civil Aviation Minister Priyankara Jayaratne has appointed a four-member committee to identify shortcomings in the National carrier SriLankan Airlines and suggest recommendations needed to overcome them while establishing it a profitable venture.

It's a start. 5 years and Billions of Rupees too late unfortunately...

Will it be independent? How deep will they look into things?

They can start by talking to the staff and the Unions - they will have plenty to say.

My concern is that Civil Aviation Minister Priyankara Jayaratne is another government appointee - this may be more toxic Sri Lankan politics.
Always fly a stable approach - it's the only stability you'll find this business

I don't think so ! Because that's not the logo Lion Air, Sri Lanka has.. Besides all of a sudden why did they think of buying a 737 ? They didn't operate for a long time noh ?

And this logo belongs to Lion air Indonesia and the Sri Lankan Lion Air logo is this.. See below.

It will be better if Lion Group open a subsidery in Sri Lanka as they already operate subsideries in Indonesia and Thailand. Lion Air currently has a fleet comprise of over 100 aircrafts and they have plans to increase their route network and fleet size in near future. Perhaps they can connect Far East and Gulf via Mattala using B737-800s. In my opinion, SriLankan has to operate out of only Colombo and it doesn't makes sense SriLankan flying routes out of Mattala e.g. CMB-BKK-HRI-CMB, CMB-HRI-MLE, CMB-MAA-HRI-CMB etc.. SriLankan has to provide nonstop flights to their destinations out of Colombo. What's the point Mihin Lanka providing business class product for low-cost destinations which were previously served by SriLankan then transfered to Mihin Lanka. Routes like Seychelles should be served by SriLankan and Mihin Lanka simply should shut!
