October 19, 2011, 9:54 pm
By Franklin R. Satyapalan
The government will take delivery of two A-320 aircraft in December, 2011. Aviation Minister Priyankara Jayaratne yesterday told The Island that this would be in line with the ongoing expansion of the national career.
The Minister said that government would take delivery of two more A-320 aircraft by March, 2012, and A-380 aircraft, capable of flying long distances, by December 2012. "Additional aircraft are needed to maintain expanding services", the MP said.
Media Secretary to the Ministry of Aviation Jinadasa Rajapaksa said that the SriLankan Airlines had a fleet of 18 aircraft, comprising five A-320s, five A-330s, six A-340s and two dual engine De-Havilland sea planes.
Minister Jayaratne said that the Mattala International Airport would be ready for opening by December 2012. It would accommodate the latest A-380 wide bodied aircraft as well.
The Minister said that almost 60 per cent of the construction of the Air Terminal, Control Tower and runaway had been completed.
