SriLankan airline loss Rs4.9bn in first four months of 2015

July 2, 2015 (LBO) – Sri Lanka’s state owned SriLankan airline recorded a loss of 4.9 billion rupees during the first four months of 2015, statistics shows.

This has been resulted to increase the accumulated losses of the airline to 130.9 billion rupees.

The airline reported a revenue of 39.6 billion rupees during the period, which is a 4 percent decrease over the budgeted revenue, but the total expenditure was. 44.9 billion rupees, which represented an increase of 24 percent compared to the same period of the previous year.

The report says that the Government has decided to prepare a viable and comprehensive business plan for Sri Lankan Airline (SLA) and Mihin Lanka Ltd. and amalgamate these two airlines due to huge losses incurred.

“Both airlines are in the process of preparation of their business plans.” The report added.

As far as I can tell this is the case with every contract signed by UL since the GOSL took over the Airline.

Each 1% of this order represents $23million. Commissions alone are worth 5-6% as a general rule.

This needs to be investigated and those responsible charged with theft and fraud.

        That's $120 Million projected losses for 2015.

Accumulated losses of just under $1 Billion. That's about 1.5% of GDP. Huge amount any way you want to look at it.

If you want an example how not to run an Airline - look no further!
Always fly a stable approach - it's the only stability you'll find this business

All thanks to current UL management for serving nonstop flights to Beijing and Shanghai. Previously these flights were routed via Mattala and Bangkok. Hopefully UL would now up the frequency of Beijing to five weekl but currently four weekly.

                        SriLankan Airlines team visits Vizag

Representatives from SriLankan Airlines visited the Port City on Tuesday to study the potential demand for flights to Vizag from the Sri Lankan capital of Colombo.

Team members Mohan Meegolle, Ranga Gunasekara and Priya Epitawala interacted with Vizag MP K Hari Babu, Vizag Development Council (VDC) vice-chairman O Naresh Kumar and international tour operators in the city as part of the study.

During the interaction, Hari Babu told the airline's representatives that people of Vizag and surrounding districts have been spending huge amounts on foreign trips to Singapore and Kuala Lumpur and there is a lot of scope for tourist traffic to Sri Lanka as well if the carrier operates flights to and from Vizag thrice a week. The MP also assured full support to the team.

The SriLankan Airlines representatives said that they will visit the city again and interact with officials of various departments, including tourism, as well as hospitality players, among other sectors, to take a final decision. The team will interact with members of the Air Travellers' Association (India) and officials of Vizag International Airport on Wednesday.

Yes, Air China is still operating Colombo with direct flights from Chengdu. Four weekly onboard A330-200.

Any possibilities new Beijing-Colombo route will become successful for Air China ? i remember Hainan Airlines previously planned this route but it didn't go ahead with a plan.
