SriLankan cancels decision to cancel flights to 3 destinations

SriLankan Airlines yesterday reversed its earlier decision to cancel flights to certain European destinations and announced that services to Rome, Milan and Moscow will remain uninterrupted.
An official announcement from its Corporate Communications Division yesterday said flight frequencies to these three destinations will remain the same.

Earlier in the week, the airline officially announced what it called "capacity adjustments" to its European route network blaming it on the rise in fuel prices, operational costs and 'economic indicators' in the EU region.

No reasons were given for the change of this decision however in yesterday's announcement.

I do not think there is any conspiracy here. It was a commercial decision (a good one at that) made by UL in order for them to get rid of/ground their oldest 3 A343s. However, they were forced to abandon that plan due to political pressure.

This is what happens when clergy tries to run an airline.

Its a time to give up the ageing A343s from the fleet so UL must need to trim the unprofitable longhaul routes. In this situation UL should fly 1 city in Italy and operate the Italy route with A320 via DXB.

              Banu,

Firstly, I do not think a A320 could operate Dubai - Italy - Dubai sectors without penalties. None of the gulf carriers use narrow bodies for flights to Italy.

Secondly, it takes away the only attraction that the UL offers, as opposed to the offerings of EK, QR, EY et al; the direct connectivity.

If UL is to make a profit they should use A332 / A333 for the route and fly direct, but I am not sure if the Sri Lankan contingent in Italy will pay the premium price for the non-stop as opposed to having a stop over in the middle east and pay a cheaper fare.

In hindsight, I think the decision to cancel the flight was the correct one, although the decision was later reversed.

Me beg to differ .. Clergy requested, or begged, and, after all, it was the Head Honcho of the country who pulled the strings ..

So this is what happens when Politicians run an airline

I am still wondering about the revenue numbers of MJ to JKT (and do they fly to MNL ?) as well as a lot of their exotic destinations ..

It looks like leases for 3 x A343s are coming to an end in Oct/Nov 2012. May be thats the reason UL is reducing the number of flights in A343 routes until they get replacement widebodies. A News Reported widebodies deliveries are beginning in 2013-2014.

UL needs to be privatized. Being with Govt is a curse. Just like AI/PK/BG/RA are useless Govt run airlines. UL is better than these but will soon become the same if steps are not taken to professionalise it and the only way to do that is either fully privatize or another JV like they had with EK.
