NPP Govt. abandons plan to privatize SriLankan Airlines

    * Says it should remain with state for tourism promotion

    * Plans for new management improvement

Colombo, September 30 (Daily Mirror) - The National People’s Power (NPP) government led by President Anura Kumara Dissanayake is to abandon initial plans by the previous rule to sell off or divest the cash strapped SriLankan Airlines, an official said.

The previous government initially planned the sale process of the national career through the State Owned Enterprises Restructuring Unit . After that the former Cabinet said it abandoned the sale process and decided to look at an alternate model to divest the airline.

However, Chairman of the NPP Economic Council Prof. Anil Jayantha said the government believes that the national career should remain with the state given its significance for the development of tourism. He said the airline would not be sold off or divested as a result.

He said a new model for the improvement of its management would be considered instead.

The previous Cabinet agreed to take over debts of US $ 510 debts of the national career in a move to attract a private investor . It originally decided to sell at least 51 percent of the state-owned carrier.

Policy decision on SriLankan Airlines restructure to be taken after elections

      Tuesday October 1, 2024 6:31 pm

ECONOMYNEXT – No decision on the restructure of state-run SriLankan Airlines will be taken until after elections bring a new government to office, Minister Vijitha Herath said.

“In this interim period we will not go for any policy related decisions,” Minister Herath told reporters at weekly post-cabinet press briefing.

“In a future government, which we will build soon, we will go for some actions. At the moment, in this short period we will not go for policy decisions.”

Sri Lanka sought a buyer for a stake sale of SriLankan Airlines but nothing was finalized, the current sale process was dropped amid weak interest.

However SriLankan has debt, including a government guaranteed bond, that has to be resolved. (Colombo/Oct01/2024)

Such a sensible decision to bring back both the aircraft & crew in CMB with revenue flight. Good job 8D and Mr. Peter Hill ! I see 4R-EXR is flying 8D flights since 29-Sep.

Do you know when ABN, ALL, ANB, AND, ANE are going to return for flying revenue flights?
Any reason why ALT delivery was delayed by the month? will it get SriLankan livery when it's delivered to UL? Mr.Arranz mentioned in our forum earlier there are some cabin work going on in ALT. I noticed on FR24 unknown A333 was due to fly from TEV to SAW earlier this week. But seems it never happened. Was thinking whether it was ALT.

                      Incorrect,
Mr Hill likes if EXR is flying for G9 until November. But it didnt happen.
All three aircrafts will get similar cabin interior and brandnew seats (probably the seat manufacturer will be UK based Mirus) by mid 2025.
CMB MLE CMB flights frequency will be increased from November 2024.
currently 8D is flying to MLE twice on somedays. Flight numbers will be 8D811/2, 8D813/4, 8D815/6.
8D is targeting a new routes, probably KUL or IXM.
No plans for new aircrafts since current fleet utilization is lower.

SkyUP usually does tech stops at RKT, but they also stopped once at BAH and DWC. Flyone will probably be stopping over at RKT, I suspect they will be deploying the A321 on these routes as I believe there is more demand but not sure.

                                Thanks for the charter dates.
