BIA Stage Two ready for tender
The much awaited US$ 500 million Stage 2 development of the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) will get underway soon.It is expected to be completed by end 2017.
The airport will be partially closed from January 2017 for urgent runway repairs.The airport will be closed for about six hours from 9.00 a.m. for a period of three months.

The runway is running at about 60% capacity and a new runway is under construction. The choke point is terminal capacity. In the next month ground will be broken on a new terminal which will be a welcome relief.

Riding a deluge of Chinese financing, Sri Lanka’s Mattala Rajapaksa International Airport was meant to become the country's number two airport and act as a catalyst for development in the region. But it hasn't yet worked out that way. With only one or two flights per day, the airport hangs on the verge of being swallowed up by the jungle that surrounds it.
