SriLankan Airlines (UL, Colombo International) has issued a Request for Proposal for the dry lease of five A330-200s or A330-300s for six years with bids due by March 27, 2023.

The state-owned carrier expects the delivery of all five aircraft within 2023 under six-year contracts. SriLankan has yet to publish detailed information concerning its requirements for the aircraft.

The RFP follows an unsuccessful tender in December 2022, which covered five A330s and five A320s. SriLankan Airlines said earlier it needed the five newly leased widebody aircraft to replace the current A330s, the leases of which are due to expire shortly.

The ch-aviation fleets advanced module shows the airline's widebody fleet currently comprises five A330-200s, which are 20.5 years old on average, and seven -300s, which are 7.8 years old on average. All twelve aircraft are dry-leased: the -200s from Carlyle Aviation Partners (three), and AerCap (two), and the -300s from Avolon (six) and Air Lease Corporation (one).

Nov 2022 - Pathirage explains that several aircraft will exit the SriLankan Airlines’ fleet over the next 18 months, and the company is in discussions with its shareholder, the Government of Sri Lanka, to secure replacement aircraft through a Request For Proposal (RFP).

Feb 2023 - SriLankan Airlines CEO Richard Nuttall confirmed to ch-aviation that three A320 family aircraft were grounded due to a lack of engines. They include an A321-200N registered as 4R-ANF (msn 8106), an A320-200N registered as 4R-ANA (msn 7486), and an A321-200 registered as 4R-ABQ (msn 3397).

SriLankan is planning to take five A330 between May and Nov 2023 on a 6 Years Dry Lease to replace older existing A330s.

Does Srilankan AL has any plan to operate current aging A330s as dedicated freighters?? Or do they retire them from the whole fleet. My personal opinion is they should convert all A330-200s to freighters...so they can eventually increase the revenue while boosting cargo operations.

There were zome rumors in early 2021 about Srilankan having planes to lease 5-6 A330-200Fs but as the local economy got worse the "rumour" turned cold.

In 2020-2021 finnancial report Srilankan did have some good revenue by operating sole A330-200F (4R-ALS) which led the airline to make a gross profit in Q1 of 2021.

So yes, I think despite the post-covid cargo and logistics boost we do have a good demand for cargo,
and old Airbus A330-200F is an excellent choice for that considering its range,fuel economy and payload. And best thing is Srilankan can easily maintain an A330 fleet. so having a fleet of cargo A330s can make a huge differece in airline revenue & profits.

For example airlines like Qatar, Ethiopian earns more by operating Cargo flights comparing to Passenger flights.

ALA, B, C and H might go hopefully. Not sure of ALS though. Wondering which A330 will bear the OneWorld livery once ALH leaves.
