June 29, Colombo: A SriLankan flight that left Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) yesterday night (28) for Japan’s Narita International Airport was forced to return to BIA due to a sudden technical fault.
Tokyo-bound SriLankan Airlines flight UL 454, had departed BIA at 8.20 p.m. yesterday and landed safely at BIA 2 hours and 25 minutes after departure.
The aircraft was the largest A330-300 Airbus owned by SriLankan Airlines. The flight was carrying 301 people on board, including passengers and crew members.
It is reported that due to the failure of the computer system to indicate that the wheel system of this aircraft is tilting properly, the pilot took steps to return to BIA as a precautionary measure and ensure the safety of everyone on board
Later, the passengers were sent to Japan on another flight, the Airport Duty Manager said.

SriLankan airlines and Fitsair seek permission to hire foreign pilots
COLOMBO, June 29 (Xinhua) -- SriLankan Airlines and Fits Air, which are established in Sri Lanka and carry out international flight operations, have sought permission to hire foreign pilots, the Civil Aviation Authority said here on Wednesday.
Both airlines have a serious shortage of pilots, said P. A. Jayakantha, director general and chief executive officer of the Civil Aviation Authority.
A large number of Sri Lankan aviation industry experts and pilots have left the country in the past six months to join foreign airlines that offer much higher salaries, he said.
The Civil Aviation Authority itself has been trying to fill eight main posts which had been vacant for a long time, however, sufficiently qualified people have not come forward for those posts, he said.
About 70 pilots attached to SriLankan Airlines had resigned during the past six months, it was revealed in parliament last week.
SriLankan Airlines needs 330 pilots to operate its flights optimally, but it now only has 260, opposition leader Sajith Premadasa said. ■

Sri Lanka's Civil Aviation Minister Nimal Siripala says the restructuring of SriLankan Airlines (UL, Colombo International) must be completed within six months, adding that job losses may occur if people resist the change. His comments come as the Sri Lankan government continues its languorous privatisation push of multiple state-owned enterprises.
