Sri Lanka is in talks with international courier airlines including UPS, Fedex and DHL to base operations at a new airport that is opening on March 18, the island's state-run airport agency chief said. "We are talking to courier airlines, UPS, Fedex, DHL," Prasanna Wickramasuriya, chairman of Airport and Aviation Services of Sri Lanka Ltd said. "They are also looking at this airport very closely, because they want to launch into the African continent." LBO reported.Comment

Taxiway and runway is not the problem at KIA. How many major world airports which comfortably handle the A380 today (such as LHR, Manchester, JFK, LAX to name a few) and that are decades old re-designed their runways and taxiways to accommodate the A380? NONE. When the A380 was planned the existing standards of runways was taken into account.
As mentioned the problem at KIA is the apron and terminal facilities.
When the new concourse thing with the aero bridges at KIA was planned back in 2002 you'd think they'd have some foresight and awareness about the future of the aviation industry as the A380 was already being marketed by Airbus and the major airlines were showing interest. But then this is SL where forward planning is never heard of -only a “wait to react to a situation once it’s too late” is the general attitude.Comment

Is this story about a birdstrike over Mattala true?
Can anyone confirm this story? This website reports an incident where a SriLankan ?testflight to the Mattala nearly crashed after a birdstrike? Sounds a bit exaggerated to me.

මත්තල ගුවන් තොටුපලට යන මාර්ගයේදී වල් අලියකු පහරදීමෙන් පෙරේදා (13) පුද්ගලයකු ජිවිතක්ෂයට පත්වූ අතර, ඊට පිළියමක් ලෙස ගුවන් තොටුපල වටා 'විදුලි වැටක්' ඉදි කිරීමට බලධාරීන් තීරණය කර ඇත. එහෙත් පියාඹන කුරුල්ලන්ගෙන් ගුවන් යානා වලට විය හැකි අනතුරු සම්බන්ධයෙන් මෙතෙක් කිසිදු තීරණයක් ගෙන නොමැත. ගුවන් තොටුපොලක් වටා විදුලි වැටක් ගැසීමද ජාත්*යන්තර ආරක්ෂණ සහතිකයක් ලබා ගැනීමට බාධාවක් වනු ඇත. මන්ද යත් හදිසි තත්ත්වයකදී විදුලි වැටකින් අනතුරු දායක තත්ත්වය දෙගුණ තෙගුණ වන නිසාවෙනි.Comment

An electric fence will be built around the perimeter of the Mattala Airport to stop wild elephants from entering the outlying areas of the airport.
Wildlife Conservation Department spokesperson Hasini Sarathchandra said technology was provided by the Department and the electric fence would be built by the airport authorities.
She said this was being done to ensure the safety of the tourists and the wild elephants.
When asked whether the human elephant conflict would intensify in the surrounding areas, Ms. Sarathchandra said the Wildlife Conservation Department had done everything possible to ensure the protection of wildlife in Mattala.
Last year there were reports of even a crocodile entering the airport.
Ms. Sarathchandra said the building of an electric fence was the only viable solution to keep elephants away as they cannot be moved out of their natural habitats.Comment
