Mihin to acquire new Boeings in 2015

    Shirajiv Sirimane

Mihin Lanka will acquire two new Boeing aircrafts in the first quarter of 2015. The two new aircrafts will have around 157 seats each and is expected to replace two of the current A321 aircraft. “The lease agreement of the current fleet of three ends in early 2015 and we are looking forward in replacing them by acquiring modern Boeings,” an official from Mihin Lanka said.

He said that although there will be an additional cost for upgrading the ‘Boeings’, they can be able to cover this cost. “The new Boeings will give a better fuel consumption and its operation costs too will be low,” he added.

In addition to the two Boeings Mihin Lanka also operates a A320 aircraft. The current three aircraft were also fitted with ETOP allowing them additional safety and fuel saving while flying over the sea. With ETOP an aircraft can fly 90 minutes with one engine.

The budget airline will introduce a new kids meal on board is also looking at flying to two new destinations, Singapore and Seychelles.

The airline during its initial stages operated to both Singapore and Bangkok and the airline is currently studying to reintroduce three weekly (evening) flights to Singapore.

President Mahinda Rajapaksa along with a business delegation visited Seychelles and numerous requests have been made to operate flights to this destination, the budget airline is expected to take off to Seychelles early next year. Katmandu was also in the radar of Mihin Lanka. However the feed back had not been too encouraging and the airline is having second thoughts on it.

In addition to daily flights to Jakarta Mihin has also launched a twice daily flight to Medan. “This is a seasonal flight targeting the Ramadan season and it will conclude in October.”

The Mihin Lanka has also commenced new air services with the start of Buddhist pilgrim season in India. This season prevails from August to November.

Mihin Lanka officials informs that from August 3, to date, more than 2,000 pilgrims have travelled to India by Mihin Lanka. The airline operates services to Baranes on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, Buddha Gaya on Saturdays. The services to New Delhi are being operated on Saturdays, Wednesdays and Mondays.

The airline also informed that facilities are being provided to government servants, pensioners and security services personnel to pay their ticket fare in ten installments. This is the only air service that provides this kind of concessions.

Arrangements have also been made to operate air services to Indian pilgrim destinations from the Mattala Rajapakse International Airport starting from next month. The airline’s current route include Bahrain, Delhi, Dhaka, Dubai, Kuwait, Gaya, Jakarta, Madurai, Medan, Sharjah and Varanasi.

in simple English, we all know UL will launch flights to SEZ (hopefully), as far as my understanding goes with this rubbish dailynews, MJ didnt see much of an opportunity with SEZ ops, coz in my knowledge SEZ is an upmarket (very expensive) tourist destination, so why on earth would any traveler travel on an LCC, and that too MJ, coz if its (SEZ) suitable for LCC's then G9 (air arabia) or flydubai would already fly to it.

so SEZ only fits for UL (a FSC from sri lanka) and not MJ, beyond that we all know Dailynews is RUBBISH!!!!!!!!!! so why bother even reading an article from their so called version of "ENGLISH".

If true this has to be one of the most moronic moves in SL Aviation. Couldnt they order 3x A320NEOs or CEOs since their crews are already trained to operate Airbus? The additional cost of training crew would be a huge burden on an airline that is struggling. Additionally if unit costs were a concern in making such a decision, they should stop giving freebies such as food and luggage. Additionally they should expand more in order to build up their size. No successful LCC is small. These guys should get a foreign management team from various LCCs and pay them more! It would be worth it because at least they would understand these concepts and make MJ profitable.

well said @ lordvader..........honestly which LCC in this world has a fleet less than a two digit figure .....MJ shud get A320neos only plus i have no idea why MJ offers F&B and Luggage for free...........G9 and FZ are perfect examples of LCC's. plus MJ turnaround times are way too long for an LCC., Becoz Air Arabia turn around time is JUST 20 MINUTES. i have flown numerous times with them and found to be highly punctual, efficient and hence speaks a lot about their management...truly speaking middle eastern carriers are highly successful.

as a student of Aviation Management at Emirates Aviation College, the way Sri Lankan aviation or Indian subcontinental aviation takes place is JOKE.

Ha ha, you couldn't make this up could you, an airline that has 100% airbus, including UL of course, now wants to have 2 Boeings and 1 Airbus, to be honest no stupid person would even think about doing this, you have to just wonder what people are in charge of decisions like this, one word for it = MADNESS, more Dollars down the drain to re-train ect all the crews.

WHY the question has to asked, did they not factor in new A320's when placing their A330 & A350 order with Airbus, surely there could have a discount here ?

And i for one would NOT like to be onboard and aircraft belonging to an outfit like this when they turn one engine off mid flight, God knows what could happen if the pilots are of same thinking/mentality as the people running this outfit !

I really do fear the worse for BOTH airlines when decisions like this are made..
