This failed Airport should not recognize as an International airport.

Although it is failed now, we should consider it as a long term investment. Once the Southern Highway reaches Hamabanthota and Railroad is connected to Katharagama in future it will attract more passangers and airlines.

Hey do you know.. now SL gov does not allow to enter new air lines just only to BIA but they demand extend it up to MRIA as well....so pity
Yep Rotana gonna come here route would be Abhudhabi-->Colombo-->Mattala-->Abhudhabi
              (no direct flights to Mattala)
no sooner all international will fly away from SL.. only loss making UL and Hemin lanka will remain here

But, think about it, there is nothing there, people walk out of the airport and see impact of malnutrition among cows. Its located in a not so wealthy region and people will be able to see that. I don't see Hambantota going anywhere ? Where would people shop ? What would they do for entertainment ? Usually When a city or a region has developed enough, thats when you see airport being built and it is usually a domestic airport. The idea of dropping an airport out of the sky in the least developed region isn't the greatest idea. I dont think people would enjoy travelling 20km-30km to get from one region to another.

all i want is EK to land at HRI, then airlines will know what HRI is lol. EK touches down at any airport, that airport becomes gold.

btw i've seen some pics of HRI with transaero B777 or B767's however couldn't exactly remember the source. does anyone knw if HRI is also a seasonal route by transaero. maybe, maybe not!!

Any news on the rumoured JQ Sri Lanka? Im guessing it has been suspended (if real) given QF's financial issues?
