SriLankan Airlines opens a new building at MRIA to house its services

SriLankan Airlines today opened a new building at the Mattala International Airport which will house its engineering, ground handling and flight operations branches operating at the new airport.

First impression of Sri Lanka when exiting the terminal building? Sri Lanka is crowded, disorganized and chaotic.

oggles my mind that the management at CMB continues to nothing about this. They could make the pickup and waiting area in the parking lot instead. And have and enforce a rule about no waiting around in the porch. But they have done nothing."

Katunayake to face 8-hour daily shutdowns

A decision has been made to impose daily eight hour shutdowns at the Katunayake Bandaranaike International Airport from January next year, The shutdowns have been imposed with the intention of of renovating its airstrips of the airport.

The second phase of the expansion they will begin the construction in January 2014

Is this official ? I heard CMB Phase II supposed to start in November 2012 but they delayed the starting date of construction work until Jan 2014 due to security reasons for Commonwealth Summit.

Any latest update on the above ? if CMB close for 8 hours that will be a disruption for flights and passengers, however 8 hours closure makes me think AASL wants to finish the Phase II as quick as possible. News says during the construction time, flights will be operated via HRI. So the government has to operate express coach services between CMB and HRI to provide each access for passengers who travel between Colombo and Mattala.

It's Okay if airlines can arrange transportation between HRI and CMB! I think they need to reconstruct this 23 years old runway, sometimes they may need to shut down BIA for couple of weeks due to runway repairs.

Thanks for the pic Banu and Sakith. Looks good! Theres actually a fair bit of room to build a third or even a fourth terminal into the future (on the right). Any other pics of what the new terminal 2 will look like?

Work with regard to overlaying the new runway (tarmac) at the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA), has begun and will be carried out during 'off peak hours' of flights landing, said to be during the day. The peak hours for flights landing at the BIA are at night and in the morning hours, he said. He added that no flights will be diverted to the Mattala Rajapaksa International Airport (MRIA), as the BIA slots cannot land or take off from Mattala.

However, a senior official attached to the Mattala Airport told Ceylon Today, that discussions are underway to shut down BIA during off peak hours in 2014 to overlay the new runway at the BIA.

The official said they are discussing the time frame for the shut down and as a result, some of the flights may land in Mattala if required during the overlaying of the new runway at BIA. This would also mean cutting down on the time of commercial operations to eight hours or less during the period of overlay. However, only one runway needs resurfacing, sources added.
