Yes, HRI should be developed for alternate airport (emergency landing / take off), pilot training school and for MRO facilities but definately not for the Sked flight operations. I'm sure our national carrier is lossing so much money because of Gov is forcing UL to operate out of HRI.

    Code:
From Oct 2014, UL is flying routes like below:

    CMB-BKK-HRI-CMB - 7W - A320
    CMB-HRI-PEK-CMB - 2W - A330
    CMB-HRI-PVG-CMB - 2W - A330
    CMB-MLE-HRI-CMB - 4W - A320
    CMB-MAA-HRI-CMB - 2W - A320
    CMB-HRI-JED-CMB - 1W - A340
    CMB-HRI-CMB - 3W - A320

MRIA earned only Rs. 16,000 for May

The Government informed Parliament today that the Mattala Rajapaksa International Airport (MRIA) earned approximately Rs. 16,000 as revenue during the month of May.

Responding to a question posed by UNP MP Dr. Harsha de Silva, Minister of Civil Aviation Priyankara Jayarathne said that it will take time for the airport to earn its full potential.

He said that according to details in his possession in Parliament today, the Mattala airport earned Rs. 16, 185 during the month of May.

Dr. Harsha de Silva then asked how long it would take for the Mattala airport to earn revenue on par with the Gatwick Airport in England as predicted by the Government.

The Minister responded saying it would take time and that discussions are already underway between Sri Lanka and several other international airlines to make Mattala one of their landing airports.

The Minister later accused the UNP of dreaming that the Mattala airport will one day be a museum. He insisted that the airport will soon be a profit making project of the Government. (Colombo Gazette)

The Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) has been rated as one of the most inefficient international airports in Asia.

The rating has been done by the Airport Transport Research Society (ATRS) and is included in the Annual Global Airport Benchmarking Report.

Sadly the same is now also the case at UL. Results speak for themselves.

Yes you can take photos from viewing gallery. No free wifi but data connections are very cheap. Like usd 10 for 12gb package

Photography is prohibited in BIA (There are some signs in the waiting area) but since the war is over it's OK to take couple of photographs. But the signs are still there.

Free Wifi connections are pretty slow. I recommend you to take Dialog Wifi it's fast and cheap.

Thank you for your help Azamh and SpookyFlyer.

I see that there are quite a lot of videos and photos taken inside the terminal posted online so hopefully it shouldn't be a big problem.

Guys, I heard that the Public View Gallery at Colombo Bandaranaike Airport is being demolished now and that is the place where the proposed terminal is going to setup. Hope they will start the construction works soon.
