It was initially to be axed then the Country's Executive intervened on behalf of routes to Italy; then the business decision taken by UL was partially reversed

So, to put things in perspective:

1. UL has not been paying the leases on their aircrafts as above.
2. UL does not pay for fuel as CPC foots the bills (on credit basis, but they never get paid).

So, where does all the revenues made by UL go?

Sponsorship of Commonwealth Games
Office of nearly 20 UL staff in UK
Airport Fees for the loss making routes
Operating cost for the loss making routes (which also include jet fuel)
Government Credit Lines

and finally the Pilots writing off couple of million dollars off the books

Sri Lankan clarifies revamping of European routes

SriLankan Airlines referring to recent reports in the media, clarified that certain capacity adjustments to its European route network, are being discussed in line with the off peak period in Europe, a release from Corporate Communications, SriLankan Airlines stated.

With May and June in Europe being the traditional off peak, the airline will review its frequencies based on the actual demand in the countries to which SriLankan presently operates.

The airline will continue to serve its traditional European gateways which serve a large clientele that fly direct and beyond to several destinations in Europe and the Americas.

With uncertainty prevailing over the proposed flight service from Madurai to Colombo by April 14, the dream of the flyers in the southern part of Tamil Nadu to fly tointernational destinations from the city is likely to get delayed further.

In February, officials of Sri Lankan Airlines and Mihin Lanka Airlines, who had come to Madurai had assured the travel community that efforts are on to commence flight services from Madurai to Colombo by April 14, on the occasion of Tamil New Year’s day. ....

SriLankan Airlines takes delivery of an new A320 - 4R-ABP on April 13. Thanks to our Forummer Skyline for emailing me this information.

Its probably a replacement aircraft for an older A320 (correct me if Im wrong). Also dont expect any new destinations (i.e. Madurai) since UL is in financial difficulty. Although they could surprise us!

SriLankan cancels decision to cancel flights to 3 destinations

SriLankan Airlines yesterday reversed its earlier decision to cancel flights to certain European destinations and announced that services to Rome, Milan and Moscow will remain uninterrupted.
An official announcement from its Corporate Communications Division yesterday said flight frequencies to these three destinations will remain the same.

Earlier in the week, the airline officially announced what it called "capacity adjustments" to its European route network blaming it on the rise in fuel prices, operational costs and 'economic indicators' in the EU region.

No reasons were given for the change of this decision however in yesterday's announcement.

Sri Lankan Airlines trains staff for Mattala airport

SriLankan Airlines plans are underway to recruit and train new staff for the upcoming Mattala International Airport at a cost of approximately Rs.20.4 million. The national carrier is currently carrying out a recruitment drive to train 102 persons for vacancies in cargo, airport, handling, ramp, airport support, flight operations and security services at the Hambantota-based airport scheduled to open in November this year, the airline’s Head of HR Pradeepa Kekulawa told the Business Times during an interview.

Last week cardinal Malcolm Ranjith met with MR and during the meeting requested MR to 'save' the direct flights between the holy land and CMB. MR immediately got on the phone to UL CEO and requested not to cancel the flights.

As I said This is a plan from MR to gain some popularity.Otherwise no need to cut down these Routes.

So He becomes the hero again..lol

Dont forget his brother in low is the Chairman of Srilankan Airlines.

I do not think there is any conspiracy here. It was a commercial decision (a good one at that) made by UL in order for them to get rid of/ground their oldest 3 A343s. However, they were forced to abandon that plan due to political pressure.

This is what happens when clergy tries to run an airline.
