SriLankan Airlines to get US$150mn cash injection in 2020: PM

ECONOMYEXT – State-run SriLankan Airlines would get a 150 million dollar cash injection in 2020 which would be part of a 500 million dollar to be injected in the medium term, Prime Minister and Finance Mahinda Rajapaksa said.

SriLankan has been badly hit by a Coronavirus crises but it is running relief flights, cargo flights to make money.

SriLankan had been making losses ever since its managing shareholder Emirate Airlines was removed and the privatization reversed in 2008.

However Prime Minister Rajapaksa blamed the last administration for not injecting cash to the airline.

“Due to the suspension in 2015 of the 2013 commenced programme to strengthen the SLA by infusing capital of USD 500 million over 5 years, and the subsequent efforts to privatize the SLA, has made it financially weak,” he said in parliament.

The government has presented an Appropriation Bill to gain approval for spending made before the new parliament was elected and to get approval for expenses for the rest of the year. (Colombo/Nov12/2020)

It's a sensible decision instead of parking the aircraft and pay for the leases.

Sri Lanka - Countries in Quarantine Exemption

                  https://www.express.co.uk/travel/art...-exclusive/amp

Its good to see Sri Lanka is one of the few countries in Quarantine Exemption.

i think Sri Lanka has to open the airport for commercial operations like the Maldives. If i am not mistaken currently Sri Lanka airports are only open for Cargo and Repatriation flights?

May be this is a time for Sri Lanka to regain the market that lost to Indian Airports in the past. SriLankan has to increase more flights to London. Lets hope British Airways would resume flights to Colombo with B787.

Please share your thoughts on this.

In Jan20, Ethiopian Airlines was planning to fly Colombo Airport with 4 weekly A350/B787, effective April 2020. Shame COVID19 must have ruined the plan.

By the way, Ethiopian Cargo B77F was flying to Colombo last Wednesday. Colombo Airport website is again showing Ethiopian Cargo (ET3602/3) is due to arrive at Colombo at 08:45am, 25 Nov. Some one please confirm.
