SriLankan plans to acquire two more aircraft by the end of 2025

The Cabinet decision by the previous government to purchase four wide-body aircraft has been suspended, Chairman of SriLankan Airlines, Sarath Ganegoda, said.

Sarath Ganegoda revealed that they were in negotiations with various parties to acquire more wide-body aircraft for the national carrier’s fleet.

He further said that the administration plans to add at least two more aircraft to the fleet by the end of this year.

The SriLankan Airlines Chairman explained that at present, the national carrier was unable to connect to profitable routes due to a lack of aircraft.

“We are unable to connect to profitable routes such as Beijing-Colombo, Nairobi-Colombo, and connections to Australia and East Africa. So, the plan is to add at least two more aircraft to the fleet by the end of this year,” he said.

Sarath Ganegoda made the comments after SriLankan Airlines welcomed its new Airbus A330-200, the first wide-body aircraft to arrive in the country in 8 years.

The newly acquired Airbus A330-200, bearing the registration 4R-ALT, arrived in Colombo today from France and received a ceremonial water salute upon arrival at the Katunayake Airport.

The aircraft, previously operated by Garuda Indonesia, was acquired on a lease basis and is powered by two Rolls-Royce Trent 700 engines. It features 18 Business Class seats and 242 Economy Class seats, all equipped with wireless in-flight entertainment and USB charging ports, offering passengers a modern and comfortable travel experience.

Commenting on the new acquisition, the SriLankan Airlines Chairman said that currently, including this new aircraft, the SriLankan fleet consists of 23 aircraft, which are 10 wide-body and 13 narrow-body aircraft.

He went on to note that the new aircraft has been obtained on a lease for 08 years from a French-based Carlyle Aviation Partners, which he said was extendable.

SriLankan Airlines has to pay only a USD 275,000 monthly fee to the new airbus leased by the SriLankan airlines from France, Transport Minister Bimal Ratnayake said today.

Air India (AI) will introduce a second daily flight between Delhi (DEL) and Colombo (CMB), effectively doubling its weekly operations from seven to fourteen flights.

The new AI277 service will depart Delhi (DEL) at 0325 hours, reaching Colombo (CMB) at 0715 hours, with the return flight AI278 scheduled from 0820 hours to 1155 hours.

This significant capacity increase reflects the growing travel demand between India’s capital and Sri Lanka’s commercial hub.

Air India will expand its regional flight operations, introducing additional services to Bangkok, Colombo, and Kathmandu from July 7, 2025.

I think 4R-ALT delivered with ex-fly gangwon seats and seat config. I believe 4R-ALT will get the similar cabin like ALH and ALS in the future.

Also what is the seating configuration of this, is it 18J 256Y? The typical UL A332 seating layout.
