Dimal Arandara appointed Chairman of SriLankan, CEO to be appointed soon

The government has appointed A. K. D. D. Dimal Arandara as the new Chairman of SriLankan Airlines with effect from yesterday, further strengthening the airline’s leadership during a key phase of its restructuring and expansion plans.

Arandara had earlier served as Chairman SLT and Acting Chairman and was also a member of the Board of Directors following the resignation of former Chairman Sarath Ganegoda.

Ganegoda, who served as Chairman for more than one and a half years, resigned from his position at SriLankan Airlines on March 31, 2026.

There had been widespread speculation that former Chairman Peter Hill would return to head the national carrier as the successor to Ganegoda, but the appointment did not materialise.

Current Sri Lanka Tourism Chairman Buddhika Hewawasam was also considered a strong contender for the position during the selection process.

Meanwhile the government is also expected to appoint a permanent CEO soon. Currently this post is being held by Yasantha Dissanayake who is also the CFO.

Thanks. It's nice to know that ABN is back in service. It seems ANB has been taken out of service since June 3rd. Furthermore, AND, ANE, and ALL are still inactive. Is UL not desperate to return these birds to service soon, given the current economy?

WEAIR Launch Marks Major Boost for Sri Lanka’s Air Cargo and Logistics Sector
The arrival of WEAIR in Sri Lanka represents a significant investment that will strengthen the country's air cargo capacity and regional connectivity, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment and Tourism Vijitha Herath said.

The Minister made these remarks while attending the inauguration ceremony of the Luxembourg-backed project recently.

WEAIR is set to operate as a Sri Lanka-based cargo airline, connecting Colombo with key destinations across South Asia, Southeast Asia, the Indian Ocean region, the Middle East, and Africa.

Addressing the gathering, Minister Herath noted that the project reflects growing international confidence in Sri Lanka’s economic potential and strategic location. He emphasized that the initiative would support the country’s ambitions to become a regional logistics hub while enhancing trade, exports, tourism-related supply chains, and cargo transportation services.

The Minister also highlighted the company’s potential to generate employment opportunities and contribute to the development of Sri Lanka’s aviation and logistics sectors.

Representatives of WEAIR, investors, industry stakeholders, and officials from the aviation and logistics sectors attended the event.

WeAir recently updated their website nicely. Is there any news on the arrival of their first aircraft?
