I assume you are referring to the JetStar story?

As far as I know UL planning to start MEL is true

Besides it will take an almost entire day to travel from CMB-MEL, with stopovers in SIN and DRW as opposed to a direct routing taking around 10.30 hours.

They have a stop-over in DRW. Using a A320 /321 on such a long route is like riding a three wheeler from Matara to Jaffna, instead of springing for a car

My thoughts exactly! Hopefully if this plan is accurate they would've already accounted for this issue! Jetstar in Australia would normally operate such a sector with a widebody aircraft.

Anyway I believe that if such an airline truly exists it would be very good for SL!

I just checked the Jetstar website and for SIN-MEL they have both the options. They offer a non-stop service on a A330 (SGD 500+ for economy and SGD 700+ for business) and also a 1 stop service via DRW on a A320 (economy SGD 800+ !!). I think the disparity in price reflects the additional costs, even though I agree that my very limited pricing statistics are anecdotal at best.

Now try to extrapolate this to CMB-MEL (2 stop overs; in SIN and DRW) and you can imagine the costs involved.

You cannot circumvent the laws of physics, if they are to be successful on this route, they need to fly a wide body non-stop or with one stop in SIN.

I wouldn't compare like that, it is more like whether you ride a Toyota Camry or a Suzuki 800, the difference only being in internal space.

Other than that, they fly, and do almost similiar speeds, and well, there are LCCs doing upto 6 hours or more using 320s and not wide bodies, unless they can fill the seats.

Heck, PR, as I see the numbers here, has been steadily subbing larger wide-bodies with 320 to most regional destinations and also to add capacity as needed, as they can't fill enough seats always for a Widebody

on the other hand, last week, ANA-SIN-NRT was constantly 50% or less filled, as an example ..

My bet again is not likely to be non-stop ..

JQ has been leveraging on their 3K operation so much Singapore has become a Mini-bhub for Jetstar, and the booking engine is merged with VF added in ..

My 2 cents ? It will be one stop via Singapore with interline by 3K

Then again, 3K having burnt their fingers in a lot of non-profitable ventures, I am not sure how soon this will take off, i.e. to CMB

Air Asia to resume flights to Colombo

Air Asia, which pulled out earlier this year, is planning a comeback to Colombo this summer through a subsidiary company, AirAsiaX, airline officials said.

Air Asia pulled out its operations to Colombo earlier this year but its subsidiary company, Air AsiaX, launched to operate as a low-cost long haul carrier, would be eyeing possibilities of entering the country, Air Asia Sales and Marketing Manager Ranjeewa Senaratne told TimesOnline.

You seem to be privy to a lot of actual statistics, therefore I will agree with your assertion that (ab)using A320 / A321 on a route that is destined for a long haul wide body is still economically viable. As I mentioned in my post, my data was anecdotal at best.

So, even if Jetstar (or whatever its subsidiary) operates CMB-MEL it will have at least 1 stop (and if it is SIN, it requires deplanning with all your belongings and being subject to security groping all over again, even if they use the same aircraft), therefore UL will most definitely have an edge if they operate a nonstop flight.

A good move to resume flights to CMB.... As there are currently no budget arilines flying the CMB-KUL-CMB route it would be beneficial for D7 because fares are expensive. Hopefully D7 starts flying soon

I get statistics and forecasts, whether I am privy to that, I wouldn't know

Not so, since SIN, with the shift of LCCs to other terminals from the dedicated LCC Terminal, allows you to interline baggage. I would think that is attractive enough for JQ/3K to do the SIN-Stopover.

SIN, I don't remember whether transit pax need to get groped, well, they never groped anyway, and have other kit to scan .. then again, Singapore Stopover has been going so all out if you stopover here, you may get incentives such as free local hop on/hop off, discount at attractions etc, which are currently on offer for SQ stopover

I don't have any info, but D7, if it starts, will be to do their long haul with stopover in CMB, all "subject to relevant authorities' approvals" .. read "FREEDOM RIGHTS"

Tony is focussing in Asia, and maybe use Malindo to uplift capacity ..

So this is the reason why 4R-ADF was upgraded with the new biz seats, its MR's personal plane.
