Boeing 737-700s would be niceSunday times on Mihin getting new aircraft: http://www.sundaytimes.lk/130728/new...aft-54894.html
The loss-making Mihin Lanka is negotiating with the Treasury to buy three new aircraft, including a Boeing, on lease, the airline’s chairman Nishantha Wickremesinghe said yesterday. “We have to compete with other international airlines. Therefore we should have a young fleet. We are negotiating with the Treasury to obtain financial assistance for the lease,” Mr. Wickremesinghe told the Sunday Times. He said the airline’s present fleet comprised three aging aircraft which needed to be replaced. Mr. Wickremesinghe said he would not be able to comment about the amount involved as talks with the manufacturers were still going on. Losses of Mihin Lanka increased by almost two fold to Rs 1.9 billion in 2011/2012 in comparison to 2010/2011.Comment

Mihin Lanka used to operate on B737 in the past but that was a wet-leased aircraft (ACMI). As umedhah said earlier, Mihin Lanka doesn't have the capt/crew who have got experience on Boeing B737, if I am not mistaken. I heard Mihin Lanka has plans to transfer 4R-MRC (A321), 4R-MRD (A321) and 4R-MRE (A320) to SriLankan Airlines. A321 is a good choice for SriLankan Airlines though!Comment

I dont understand.. if those 3 320s are aging for MJ, it will be same for UL right?? UL is more well reputed hence shouldn't be using aging a/c...Mihin Lanka used to operate on B737 in the past but that was a wet-leased aircraft (ACMI). Why re-invent the wheel when UL / MJ have the end to end infrastructure for A320/A321 operation already in place.
The sensible thing to do would be to transfer the MJ aircraft to UL and close the shop. One hemorrhaging airline is enough!Comment

True enough. Even UL has gone with this trend, putting A320s on KUL, SIN and DXB routes more times a day. It's a good strategy I guess, and makes for a more flexible travel schedule.Actually the current trend in the Middle East and Asia is to promote frequency, hence the use of smaller aircrafts with daily frequency rather than wide bodies operating 2-3 times a week. This is a sign of a maturing traveler base whose lifestyle is becoming more sophisticated.
Gone are the days when people made travel decisions months in advance (even for VFR) and stuck with those plans. Now the decisions are made impromptu and dates change as they go by, hence the need for daily flights.
We saw this fragmentation taking place in the US in the late 80s and early 90 resulting in their domestic operations (including transcon) almost completely taken over by the narrow bodies and regional jets / props.Comment

I thought exactly the same!! SriLankan Airlines could configure few A320s with All Economy Class to serve Low-cost market like Jakarta, Dhaka, Sharjah and Bahrain.Comment

Well that's a poor decision. Since most of our engineers are rated for Airbus aircrafts, not Boeing. We'd probably have to get engineers and technicians for BoeingComment

Not sure if this is discussed here before; but Tiger is pulling out of CMB in end of Aug as per airlineroute. net.
Routes is the home of the world’s leading aviation network development conferences and events. Plus aviation news and features, and profiles of global airlines and airports.
Also same website reporting Gan - CMB service by Maldivian which was mentioned here before.
