We're talking about profitability and management. Harry was at the reins for a very short time just before EK took over. By that time the delays had been cut down by 90% those who caused it and those who were inefficient were all FIRED... The bottom line of the airline was in the black from the red and that is why Tim Clark and the like couldn't stand the man as he prevented them from plundering from the airline and taking it back... The delays and inefficiencies were the result of the rote that had set in before the guy took over as Chairman/CEO... He came a long way since taking over and was never given the chance of finishing the job, sorry to say....

Delay and efficiencies were fixed by EK bringing proper management team...including stronger delivery service management team. If it not for EK UL would have need to file bankruptcy soon after July 2001. Harry J is upset coz he could not interfere with the management. We're talking about profitability and management. This is bullshit and you know it.... before Harry J, the airline was run to the whims and fancies of the Directors and Govenment, not as a commercial venture... I will be opening a can of worms if I come out with what I know... I personally know of aircraft being deliberately delayed by Directors and Politicians for their personal benefit...Comment

It is not BS and it is a fact...before privatisation this airline was a mess and after nationalisation this airlines is in a cesspool. This is bullshit and you know it.... before Harry J, the airline was run to the whims and fancies of the Directors and Govenment, not as a commercial venture... If I am correct harry was the chairman again soon after nationalisation 2008; If he so good why he could not fix the airline soon after EK exit
flight delay was only due to CBKLast edited by Speedbird; 04-08-2013, 05:13 PM.Comment

Harry J built up his empire through questionable means, he didn't do it through being a good business man. He didn't do any good at the CPC either, just rigged tenders and over paid.
What UL needs is proper airline management from experienced airline managers. If it had stayed with EK the country as a whole would be reaping the benefit of a profitable airline and we Sri Lankans would not have to waste money flying on other airlines. That's the fact end of story.
MODERATORS: Poor judgment by posting a topic like this on this thread. Have a separate discussions/debate thread. This should be left for information. Not to hear everyone's views on running UL. The last three pages are various arguments on running UL and very little facts.Last edited by NeatStuff; 05-08-2013, 05:44 AM.Comment

Whatever happened to Peter Hill (ex UL and Oman Air CEO)? Doubt he'd come back but wouldn't he be a good candidate for Chairman? IMHO the best way to turn around UL would be to get a foreign CEO or Chairman who is less likely to accept political interference. Even Bangladesh managed to do this with Biman recently.Last edited by lordvader; 05-08-2013, 07:37 AM.Comment

when i last read an interview of peter hill on aviation business magazine around 1.5 yrs ago, he said that he's returning back to SL to reside as he was retiring from oman air as well at that time. the reason for him to live in CMB was coz his wife is a sri lankan, plus he stated that SL is such an amazing place for him.....and the fact that his visa was cancelled during the EK/UL renewal talks, and he's too old (retired) , seems like he wont be a CEO of an airline again.....specially UL...Comment

Sri Lanka's state airline in MRO venture with Lufthansa Technik 07 Aug, 2013 10:13:30
Aug 07, 2013 (LBO) - State-run SriLankan Airlines will start operating a joint venture aircraft repair and maintenance organization (MRO) with Lufthansa Technik by July 2014, an official said.
SriLankan chief executive Kapila Chandrasena said the MRO is expected to earn revenues of 100 million US dollars a year, with an investment of 14 million US dollars in machinery and equipment. The repair facility will be located at the Mattala international airport. The facility will have four bays that can service Airbus A320 and Boeing 737 aircraft Chandrasena said. The facility is expected to employ about 400 people and will help bring profits to SriLankan.
So Luciano Technik or whatever was indeed Lufthansa Technik as someone pointed out earlier!Comment

MRI need some sort of traffic......i was at HRI the other day.........the airport is LITERALLY EMPTY and the general public r allowed a tour till check -in desks after security. the operators like UL are having good loads (source UL offices), but they are all pax who DO NOT disembark/embark at HRI.
whats the point having an airport that caters only to such pax. the road access to HRI is empty....this is NOT how an int'l airport is supposed to be.
the only positive part is that its super clean, well done , and much attractive in looks in comparison to BIA.
something literally needs to be done to make HRI earn revenue and profits....and not wait like another 10-15yrs for it to be profitable.Comment

If Harry J was not the chairman then who was the Executive Chairman in Jan 2008. http://sundaytimes.lk/080113/News/news00011.html
Privatization works coz they are responsible for their shareholders. Socialism does not work coz they are not responsible for anyone.
It depends on the shareholding of the company; Registrar of Sri Lankan companies do not say that Chairman needs to be a Sri Lankan.
Donald J. Carty (Canadian) is the Ex Chairman of AMR Corp. (American Airline) and current Chairman of Virgin America. Akihiko Nakauchi (Japanese) is the Chairman of Colombo Dockyard
It is built for one individual's vanity and egoLast edited by Speedbird; 08-08-2013, 01:34 AM.Comment
