Better Wifi facilities at BIA in three months: Minister Nimal Siripala

Transport and Civil Aviation Minister Nimal Siripala De Silva said yesterday steps would be taken to provide Wifi facilities at the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) within three months.

Responding to JVP MP Bimal Ratnayake, who said Wi-Fi facility at the BIA was very poor, the minister told parliament that he was not aware of such a situation and that he had instructed the officials to provide the facility within three months.

The MP said even the world’s poorest airport was equipped with Wi-Fi facilities whereas in Sri Lanka, passengers had to wait in long queues to get the boarding pass scanned to obtain the password.

The minister said the Wi-Fi facility was available at two points at the arrival and departure lounges and admitted it was not sufficient.

Yes this is extremely minor part of the project. For major part over 90% nothing is finalized including funding from JICA.

additional 17 bays are not going to help (unless they are used for Cargo)...imagine the boarding gates B1 - B6 which are already congested...how are they going to board...check in counters...baggage belts for additional aircraft. This airport is already at breaking point.

Japan donates Rs. 300 mn worth equipment to Sri Lanka's Colombo international airport

May 15, Colombo: The Japan International Cooperation System (JICS) under its economic and social development fund program, has donated airport machinery and equipment worth Rs. 300 million to Sri Lanka's Bandaranaike International Airport.

Japanese Ambassador, Kenichi Suganuma Monday (14th May) has symbolically handed over the consignment including vehicles and other technical equipment to the Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation Services Nimal Siripala De Silva.






The consignment includes five service vehicles, two ambulances, five, Air control room VHF systems, four communicable disease detection machines, and eight liquid explosive detection machines.

Deputy Minister Ashok Abeysinghe also participated in this occasion.

Where are they going to build the second runway?

I think it's "Remote Apron and Taxiways" under construction. Contract had been awarded in 2017.02 according to this. I saw a news item recently minister saying they'd started construction.

The Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) has handled 9.5 Million air passengers in the year 2016, and as per the passenger forecast, it is anticipated that it will have to handle around 14.5 Million air passengers by the year 2020. Accordingly, the proposal made by Hon. Nimal Siripala de Silva, the Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation, to award the contract for construction of the ‘Remote Apron and Taxiways’ with a view to increasing the BIA accommodation capacity to 15 Million air passengers per year and developing the infrastructure facilities of the Airport implemented under the Bandaranaike International Airport Development Project (BIADP) - Phase II with the loan grant provided by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), as recommended by the Cabinet Appointed Procurement Committee, was approved by the Cabinet.

Hazama Corporation has been appointed as the construction contractor for Package B. In April 2017, construction work commenced on Package B. Construction works on Package B are scheduled to be completed in October 2019.

JICA does not disburse loan without proper project...most of the AASL profits are diverted to repay loan and maintain HRI

AFAIK the loan has already been disbursed by the Japanese. AASL is profitable and probably has the capacity to pay back the loan (although it may leave a lot to be desired in relation to its operations).

That's a preparation for construction for Remote Apron E and taxiways. Can you see cement for proposed Apron E tarmac have been loaded near AirForce base?

I think we can see Apron E and interim terminal are completed by end of 2019 . Hopefully these works completed ontime with good quality.

The GOSL is out of money - they don't have $500 million just laying around.

None of this will be built anytime soon.

No money = no terminal. It's a very simple concept.

Construction works on Package B are scheduled to be completed in October 2019. Subject to the appointment of contractor on package A, construction works are expected to be completed in 2022.

The project involves the expansion of Bandaranaike International Airport, Katunayake, Sri Lanka.

The US$500 million project includes the following:
