I absolutely agree that buying more fuel efficient aircraft is not going to magically compensate for the incompetence and mismanagement.@Cayman
The A350 will certainly save fuel vs A340. No issue there.
My point is that because there is huge difference in lease costs between the A340 and A350 the cost savings are going to be a lot less. It isn't some magical solution to profitability as is repeatedly mentioned.
Corrected calculation 4400nm x 2 x 30 x5 = $1,320,000/month in fuel savings. Subtract the difference in leasing costs leaves you with $820,000 in savings.
With losses of $13,000,000+/month this is only going to make a 6-7% difference. Savings could very well be less if the difference in lease costs is more than $500,000/month.
(Historical note:- Senior UL Captain told me the same fuel efficiency argument was used when the Tristar was replaced by the A340)
@Srilankan1
Too little too late IMHO.
For an otherwise well run airline however, the increased leasing cost is easily set off by the potential savings in fuel costs and that is where I had disagreed with your assertion.
BTW, according to CGM, CMB-LHR distance is 4708 NM and with the obligatory 30-45 minutes London city tour before descending in to LHR, I thought 5,000 NM is a fair figure. Having said that, your figure of USD 1.3M a month saving is more plausible, as I did not account for the fact that the same aircraft cannot be rotated fast enough for the next trip the following day with westward block time exceeding 11 hours, so the actual utilization of the A359 would be less.Last edited by Cayman; 05-06-2014, 02:37 PM.Comment

Now that we are opening this can of worms again, we all know the reason: MR's entourage wanted seats on a UL flight from LHR to CMB at short notice and the airline refused to bump off fare paying passengers.
This again goes to prove that my suggestion, that MR should have his own presidential aircraft (and in my opinion he deserves one, as the head of the state - and now even more so as the chairperson of the commonwealth-). It will be a lot cheaper for the country even if he gets his own A380, because the damage caused to the UL will then be avoided and UL could be run like a commercial enterprise.Comment

Yes Cayman...We all know the reason why the management contract was not extended; but when you have internet trolls mis representing/skirting around facts like saying breaking away from EK was due to a simple and just ending of a term then I have a problem with that statement.Comment

I like that question. very good one.
if you go to skyscapers Forum i still have Hill's photo as my Avatar. I changed it soon after MR eliminated that excellent CEO from Srilankan Airline.Comment

I agree with you. He should probably get an A319CJ so that way UL can earn revenue from maintaining it. And the best way to maintain UL is to sell it (or even part privatise) it to a local. Not sure if its true but I read in a paper that Harry J was interested a few years ago? Someone like him would be able to restructure UL well. And they would be more willing to look for foreign staff in areas where needed.This again goes to prove that my suggestion, that MR should have his own presidential aircraft (and in my opinion he deserves one, as the head of the state - and now even more so as the chairperson of the commonwealth-).
