I lived in Sydney for couple of years; I know this market. Most of the Sri Lankan expat in MEL work in the public transport sector in Melbourne. All of them want UL to fly to MEL but when push come to shove...i.e. let say UL demands a premium $100 per tickets since it is non stop flight to CMB; again let say family of 4 want to travel to CMB. This is $400 difference; it is big chump change (nearly 1/3 of monthly house mortgage)...hope you get the picture. Next issue is GST rate in Australia is 10% so most of them (including other races living in Australia) want to stop in SIN to buy big ticketed items. Only way UL can make this route profitable is...UL need to compete against the kangaroo route. for that UL need a larger fleet; which UL does not have. larger fleet with excess capacity with lower labour cost can undercut the establish carriers in the kangaroo route.
By the way there are no 400K Sri Lankans living in MEL or in all over Australia. who ever gave you that stats has been smoking something...& the burghers who left Ceylon in 60's does not consider them as Sri Lankans and has extremely limited ties to Sri Lanka. They consider themselves as Australians. They visit Europe or North America for their holidays.
