I hope UL stops being so cheap at least after they join Oneworld. This is not appropriate for an airline that intends to be in the same wagon as BA and QR

Has UL gone completely mad? I'm sure it would take less time to walk to TRZ from Colombo than to fly with a stopover in the southern tip of Sri Lanka. This is ridiculous.

Was there a bird strike on LHR bound a/c resulting all those heavy delays?

                London bound UL flight nosedives

Plunges to 10,000 feet from 35,000
                January 2, 2014, 9:19 pm

                By Shamindra Ferdinando

National carrier Sri Lankan is investigating the circumstances under which a London bound flight rapidly lost altitude causing panic among passengers as well as the crew on Wednesday afternoon.

Sources alleged that the aircraft had nosedived from about 35,000 feet to about 10,000 before the Captain of UL 503 managed to regain control of the craft which took off from the Bandaranaike International Airport in the afternoon.

The flight returned to the BIA where passengers were told that a cracked window pane may have resulted in the flight losing control.

The same flight took off at 2.30 am yesterday after having replaced the damaged window pane. In spite of reservations, passengers had no option but to take the flight to London.

The Sri Lankan is investigating possible lapses on the part of its staff.

the newspaper report is wrong apparently according to UL sources becz UL says that it is the aviation standard procedure to reduce altitude due to the nature of the incident that actually happened.

I was at CMB airport on the 2nd Jan early morning and saw that there was a LHR bound flight at the gate next to us and noticed a significant delay on the FIDS, later on I then noticed on Flight radar there was a UL503D and a UL 503 a few hours apart flying over Europe. Not sure of the rego, but im pretty sure the a/c in question was A340
