Mihin Lanka to take over MRIA
By Damith Wickramasekara
View(s):
Mihin Lanka will take over the Mattala Rajapaksa International Airport operations from SriLankan Airlines soon, Civil Aviation Minister Priyankara Jayaratne said yesterday. He said the move would mean that Mihin Lanka, now based at the Bandaranaike International Airport in Katunayake, would shift to Mattala and undertake the operations including ground handling, maintenance and refuelling among other functions.
‘The objective of this exercise is to make Mihin Lanka a viable entity so that it will have ways of generating income. It will be able to enter into agreements with different airlines through this system,” Mr. Jayaratne said. The minister said a separate Board of Directors would be appointed for Mihin Lanka but under the same Chairman of SriLankan Airlines. The Board of Directors would be responsible for turning the organization into a profit making institution.
Mr. Jayaratne said an independent committee would also be appointed to Mihin Lanka to recommend ways of reducing losses. At present Mihin Lanka has three aircraft and would increase the number of flights following the changes, he said. The Minister said that under the plans to improve Mihin Lanka they hope to introduce additional packages to selected destinations. Mihin Lanka lost more than Rs 2.8 billion in 2012 and last year’s estimated loss rose sky-high to a staggering Rs. 1.4 billion.

This is a good move. And I think Mihin Should operate there ground handeling as a seperate company(Like DNATA).So in long term they can take operations in other Airports across the world.Comment

yep. this gives UL time to focus on long haul/regional flights in/out of CMB only and also gives HRI a based carrier which is MJ.Comment

Sri Lankan will have to start CGK,DAC,SHJ,BAH,SEZ routes.I think the three A321's are taken for this. But it's a good move.
MJ will have to come out of this Buget carrier and be a full service carrier.Mainly MJ will have to focus on trasit traffic.Guys lets give your opinion of which routes should mihin mainly operate.Comment

MJ should start their Ground Handling and Catering under some other name.As this two sectors are very profitable,In Long term MJ should focus of having a ground handling company like SWISSPORT or DNATA.See which Airport will want to have a ground hanling company under any foriegn carrier name.
Eg:See if Male airport wanted a new ground hanling company can UL bid under SriLankan Ground Handling name.
So as MJ is Opening a new entity, they should focus on this as well.should think of long term expantions as well.Comment

UL better off codesharing CGK with MH ( I remember reading that thy already do, but correct if im wrong).
I think the same could apply for BAH, ZRH (Starting June 1st) & LAX ( Since MH is dropping this route) as well.. codeshare with EY. (I dont think WY operates daily to ZRH) They could do the same for MXP as well with a daily service to MXP via AUH on EY. the same could apply for SEZ, but if they insist on operating UL metal, then its just a matter of operating with a different face using the MJ slots to both SEZ, DAC and Madurai.
I dont know wht the UL planning department is thinking.. but they could take a leaf out of the Virgin Australia model.Last edited by ULlove; 02-03-2014, 03:51 PM.Comment

1. UL and MJ should NOT code share, as one is a full service premium carrier (at least nominally), while the latter is a confused carrier with an identity crisis (not knowing whether they are a budget airline or not).
2. The reason why MJ is being offered the ground handling in HRI is to make is show a profit, as ground handling is always (and had always been) profitable. This way the "MJ Group Financial Results" will look less disastrous than they are today, as the non-profitable airline operations will be subsidized by profitable ground handling.
3. I agree that MJ should develop HRI as a transit hub, as it is ideally located within 4-6 hour flights from more than half the global population, most of whom are potential customers for low cost carriers.
4. UL must up the game and upgrade their product to keep its 'premium' label intact. CMB should also be developed as an O&D as well as transit hub for premium passengers.Comment

I think Mihin Lanka will transport the passengers who fly between South Asia-Middle East and Far East-Middle East. It's a good move which will increase passenger movements at HRI and on the other hand MJ will expand the flight-network. According to AIS, MJ increases SHJ service from two to six weekly effec S14.Sri Lankan will have to start CGK,DAC,SHJ,BAH,SEZ routes.I think the three A321's are taken for this. But it's a good move.

@Aviational - Any idea exactly when MJ going to shift the operations to HRI?Comment
