Sri Lanka to exempt embarkation tax at Mattala airport till June 2027

Sri Lanka’s cabinet has decided to extend an exemption of airport tax at Mattala International Airport till June 2027, Minister Nalinda Jayatissa said.

Some airlines, including Azur Air has expressed interest in operating to the airport, Minister Jayatissa said.

Sri Lanka has earlier exempted the embarkation tax for passengers at Mattala airport to promote more traffic.

Sri Lanka will deploy a special strike force to keep wild elephants away from a loss-making airport in a bid to encourage airlines to use it, the government said on Oct 8.

Media Minister Nalinda Jayatissa said the cabinet of ministers had approved the establishment of a wildlife unit with 18 guards to ensure elephants and other wild animals do not stray onto the runway at Mattala.

Sri Lanka’s Katunayake International Airport is facing congestion, with a new terminal delayed due to an economic crisis. (Colombo/Oct08/2025)

Jetstar (Australia) is reportedly exploring the possibility of launching services to Colombo. This development comes after Jetstar Asia ceased its operations on July 31. While Jetstar Asia’s Colombo route had been profitable, the decision to cease operations was part of a wider restructuring. If introduced, Jetstar Australia’s entry could strengthen connectivity for Sri Lanka’s growing travel market.

Riyadh Air is preparing to serve Colombo, Sri Lanka, by seeking a General Sales Agent (GSA) partner in the region and conducting market exploration, according to industry news. Although specific flight details are unconfirmed, Colombo is considered a potential destination within the airline's broader expansion strategy.

Hi guys, seems like Batik Air Malaysia has pulled out from operating to CMB from DEC 11 onwards, cannot find the reservation on the website and for some reason it seems like they have stopped promoting Sri Lanka as a new destination. Can someone please confirm this?

    Thanks guys.

I agree ! I wonder why CMB is not allowing newly applied foreign airlines to operate during off-peak times?
    ....
As far as I know, CMB only has 22 immigration and emmigration counters, and currently CMB is set out to roll out the new E-Gates, ive seen them getting installed but they haven't been operational, hopefully they will operate soon and ease congestion, rumours are going around that they are due to operate at the end of this month or in November.

Speaking at the International Tourism Leaders Summit 2025, held on 2nd October 2025 at BMICH under the patronage of President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, Prof. Ruwan Ranasinghe, Deputy Minister of Tourism, highlighted that both scheduled and charter operations are contributing to this surge in demand. “Some airlines have considered Mattala Airport as an alternate option, though many have not,” the Minister noted. He further stated that BIA was originally designed to handle 6 million passengers per annum, but now accommodates over 10 million annually. “It is essential to proceed with the long-overdue expansion. I personally believe BIA should have had two runways by now, after six decades of operations,” he added. Prof. Ranasinghe emphasized that addressing these infrastructure and capacity challenges remains a top priority, noting that the tourism sector is also facing direct challenges in achieving its tourist arrival targets due to the current airport limitations.
