The restructuring of SriLankan Airlines is expected to commence in six months, following the guidance and recommendations provided by the expert committee appointed to restructure the institution.
The Civil Aviation Ministry is expecting to receive the expert committee report within the given time. The Deputy Subject Minister, Janitha Ruwan Kodithuwakku told The Daily Morning the expert committee the Ministry has appointed is currently evaluating the proposals and their own ideas on restructuring SriLankan Airlines, and that after the evaluation, the Government will receive the report. "We will be going for restructuring after the report according to the guidance of the committee," he said.
When queried about the room for international parties to suggest restructuring models, given the Hong Kong-based private equity firm Transwell Corporation Limited had submitted a comprehensive private investor-led turnaround and restructuring proposal last week, he said those proposals will be evaluated through the committee. "There will be more proposals received by the committee to help it suggest ways to restructure this. All of them will be evaluated by the committee and they will provide us with the final restructuring model," he said.
In the wake of the Ministry's decision to restructure the loss-making SriLankan Airlines, the Cabinet of Ministers had approved last month (in July) the appointment of a special committee headed by the Presidential Senior Adviser on the Digital Economy Dr Hans Wijayasuriya to oversee the strategic review and restructuring of the SriLankan Airlines. The restructuring is planned to be done according to the model proposed.

Vietnam’s low-cost airline Vietjet Air has commenced direct flight operations between Sri Lanka and Vietnam, with its inaugural flight arriving at the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) last night (18).
Vietjet’s inaugural flight VJ-1875 arrived at Katunayake at 9:33 p.m., carrying 169 passengers from Ho Chi Minh City.
The service is operated using an Airbus A320 aircraft with 180 economy-class seats.
A notable feature of the inaugural flight was that the aircraft was piloted by two Sri Lankan nationals — Captain Thivanka Silva and First Officer Randeer Perera.
After a brief turnaround, the aircraft departed Katunayake for Ho Chi Minh City carrying 171 passengers.
Vietjet will operate the direct service three times a week, on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays, connecting Ho Chi Minh City with Colombo.
The inaugural flight also received a water salute upon arrival at the Bandaranaike International Airport.

Vietnam Airlines has officially launched direct air services between Vietnam and Sri Lanka, with its inaugural flight arriving at Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) in Katunayake last night (16).

The Airbus A320, operating as flight VN-671 from Ho Chi Minh City, arrived with 164 passengers on board. The aircraft was welcomed with a ceremonial water salute organised by Airport and Aviation Services (Sri Lanka) Private Limited.
The return flight from Colombo to Vietnam departed with 172 passengers.
Under the new service, Vietnam Airlines will operate three direct flights a week between Ho Chi Minh City and Katunayake on Sundays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Each flight will take approximately four hours and 30 minutes.
A special ceremony was held at BIA to mark the launch of the new route, with Vietnamese Ambassador to Sri Lanka Trinh Thi Tam attending as the Chief Guest.
The event also featured a traditional Kandyan dance performance organised by Sri Lanka Tourism, a cake-cutting ceremony and a warm welcome for arriving passengers.

News: #Ethiopia, #Maldives sign air services agreement to establish direct air connectivity
Addis Abeba — Ethiopia and the Maldives have signed a Bilateral Air Services Agreement (#BASA), paving the way for direct air connectivity between the two countries and expanding Ethiopian Airlines' access to destinations across #Asia and #Oceania.
The agreement was signed last week in Malé following two days of negotiations between the Ethiopian Civil Aviation Authority (#ECAA) and Maldivian aviation officials, according to the Ethiopian Civil Aviation Authority.
The accord was signed by ECAA Director General Yohannes Abera and Maldives' Minister of Tourism and Civil Aviation Mohamed Ameen. The Ethiopian delegation also included ECAA Economic Regulation Director Nardos Bedilu, alongside Ethiopian Airlines' Vice President for Strategic Alliances and Director of International Alliances.
According to the Authority, the agreement grants Ethiopian Airlines the opportunity to exercise Fifth Freedom traffic rights through the Maldives, allowing the carrier to operate services onward to destinations including #Colombo, #Perth, #Sydney, #Singapore, #Kuala_Lumpur, #Bangkok, #Jakarta, #Christchurch, #Auckland, and #Wellington.
The Civil Aviation Authority said the agreement is expected to strengthen trade, tourism, investment, and people-to-people ties between Ethiopia and the Maldives while expanding Ethiopia's international aviation connectivity.
The Authority added that the agreement forms part of Ethiopia's broader efforts to strengthen the aviation sector by expanding international partnerships and establishing legal and regulatory frameworks that support the growth of the country's air transport industry.
The latest agreement comes as Ethiopian Airlines continues to expand its international network and pursue new bilateral aviation partnerships aimed at strengthening Addis Abeba's position as a regional and global aviation hub. AS
Hi Guys, sorry if this was already discussed and I know this not directly related SL aviation. However, my point if at all we are aiming to be the best aviation hub for Asian region, we should not miss attracting major players to operate via CMB (SL). Imagine, how far Africa can go and being part of that journey?
Looks like we missed a great opportunity here.
End of the day become a transit hub is only way CMB becoming a major hub in this journey? isn't it.

Hi,
Logically, starting a Legacy/Full Service Carrier in Sri Lanka is bit questionable because of the nature of the market population and it needs a huge investment and starting Full Service Carrier with two air crafts is also risky decision leading to higher overhead costs.
Therefore , this startup should be a LCC carrier.
Starting with a completely new route is also a risky decision for a Startup Air Line , Because of that this airline should also start with comfortable short-haul route likes MAA, MLE, DAC.
And I would like to highlight, still Network like MLE -DAC and Middle East - South-east Asian cities has enough room for LCCs, Point to Point traffic will not help in a long run for an airline since Point to Point traffic will only help during directional peak periods. and Also Narrow Body jet with MEL (Minimum Equipment List) is less costly for the first few years of the startup.Leave a comment:

The introduction of a new international carrier under a Low-Cost Carrier (LCC) model is fantastic news for the aviation and tourism sectors in Sri Lanka. Utilizing the existing DP Aviation AOC should certainly help streamline the rollout process.
Please keep us posted as things progress—especially regarding the official launch timeline, the branding, MSN of the A320s, and the initial route network for the two A320s.

Greetings!!!
Sri Lanka will have the Third International Scheduled Passenger Airline Soon. Initial Fleet will be comprised of Two A320 Jets. Business Model will be LCC (Low Cost Carrier) and will use the same AOC currently owned by DP Aviation. Ownership is currently working closely with CAASL and majority of the ownership will be under a foreign investor.Leave a comment:
